Need to know
Jim Carrey is known for his iconic adaptation of the role of The Grinch; however, he nearly quit his part in the Christmas classic after experiencing unexpected “torture”
What you need to know about how Jim Carrey played the role of The Grinch:
- Jim Carrey has always been praised for his role in How The Grinch Stole Christmas; however, it turns out he nearly quit the part due to the extreme methods it took to transform him into the iconic festive character. After making the discovery, some fans say it’s “ruined” the Christmas film for them.
- The actor previously opened up about making the film on the The Graham Norton Show when he admitted just how gruelling his experience on set proved to be. Carrey revealed how demanding preparation for the part actually was, and people couldn’t believe how much effort it took. During the interview, he said: “When I did The Grinch, literally the makeup was like being buried alive every day.”
- Explaining how long he spent in makeup, Carrey added: “The first day was about eight and a half hours, and I went back to my trailer and put my leg through the wall, and I told Ron Howard I couldn’t do the movie. Then Brian Grazer came in being the fix it man, and came up with a brilliant idea, which was to hire a gentleman who is trained to teach CIA operatives how to endure torture, so that’s how I got through The Grinch.”
- Even though Carrey had to have the costume makeup applied 100 times throughout production, the actor admitted he understood he had to do it for “the kids”. It’s reported the expert taught him distraction methods to help him develop particular mindsets to complete the project, which aided him to cope with the severe physical and mental discomfort during filming.
- To get through the role, Carrey said he did things such as listening to the Bee Gees repeatedly and smoking cigarettes through an extended holder to prevent his costume from catching fire. Occasionally, he would even strike himself in the leg. The Grinch may be one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time, but you may not realise just how much effort the leading actor put into making it.
