The brutal murder of a community dog named Orelha has sparked national outrage in Brazil.

The 10-year-old dog, who lived in the upscale Praia Brava neighbourhood in Florianópolis, was beaten so badly by a group of teenagers that he had to be put down.

Orelha was well known and loved by locals. He was one of several community dogs in the area who were cared for by residents.

Local residents say he was peaceful and friendly, often seen walking around and greeting people and other dogs.

His violent death has shocked the country and received widespread attention on social media.

A veterinary report confirmed the dog had severe trauma to his head, swelling on the left side of his face, bleeding from the mouth and nose, and possible fractures to the jaw.

He also showed signs of breathing problems and a slow heartbeat. He was found on January 4th and euthanized on January 5 because of his severe injuries.

Police suspect 4 teenagers, parents tried to cover up

Police identified four teenage suspects in the attack. Two are currently in Brazil, and two others were reportedly abroad. They returned on Thursday.

Authorities have also identified three adults suspected of trying to interfere with the investigation. Cell phones and other evidence were seized in a search and seizure operation.

The case is being followed by the Santa Catarina Public Prosecutor’s Office. One of the adults under investigation is reportedly a police officer and father of one of the teens. Officials are checking whether he tried to threaten or influence a witness.

The crime has led to public anger, especially online. Many Brazilians, including celebrities like Paolla Oliveira, Ana Castela, Heloísa Périssé, Paula Burlamaqui, Luisa Mell and Rafael Portugal, have spoken out, demanding justice.

The hashtag #JustiçaPorOrelha (“Justice for Orelha”) has been widely shared.

On Thursday, a court in Florianópolis ordered social media companies Meta and Bytedance to remove all posts that reveal personal information about the teenagers involved.

Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok must delete any posts that include names, images, or videos identifying the minors.

They also have 24 hours to block uploads that could repost that content.
