Nick Jonas got visibly emotional while recalling the harrowing early days of his daughter Malti Marie’s life, opening up about her premature birth and long hospital stay on Jay Shetty’s podcast.
Reflecting on fatherhood, Nick shared what he would tell his younger self: “Congratulations, you get to marry Priyanka Chopra Jonas. That is pretty cool. And also your daughter is incredible. She is magic in every sense of the world.” Speaking about Malti, who recently turned four, he added that watching her grow fills him with awe and hope for her future.
Malti Marie was born prematurely via surrogacy under what Nick described as “very intense circumstances.” The couple had been expecting her arrival in April, but received an urgent call that she would be born much earlier. “She was 1 pound and 11 ounces, and she was purple basically,” Nick recalled, fighting back tears.
He credited the hospital staff for saving Malti’s life. “The angels at the hospital resuscitated her, intubated her, and got her taken care of really, really quickly,” he said, expressing deep gratitude to the medical team.
Because her birth coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic, Nick and Priyanka spent nearly every day at the hospital for three and a half months, taking turns in 12-hour shifts. “I can almost smell the hospital even now,” he said, describing the experience as both comforting and frightening. During this time, Malti underwent six blood transfusions as she slowly gained strength and weight.
“She fought every single day,” Nick shared. “After six blood transfusions, she was doing great, and we finally got to take her home.”
Opening up about how they coped as a couple, Nick said he and Priyanka had constant, difficult conversations about caring for their daughter while also supporting each other. “Parenthood is a lot for everybody, especially in those early stages. It became about staying emotionally tough and being there for one another,” he explained.
Nick reserved special praise for Priyanka, calling her “a brilliant woman with a true heart and perspective.” He added, “The way she handled those days was so inspiring to me. She allowed those days to be tough, but she was tougher for our little girl.”
Ultimately, Nick said patience, both with each other and the situation, helped them survive one of the most challenging periods of their lives, making Malti’s journey all the more meaningful today.
