Kristen Stewart has revealed she’s ‘still being haunted’ by the late Diana, Princess of Wales and cannot drive around London or Paris without thinking about the royal

A Hollywood actress claims she’s “haunted” by Diana, Princess of Wales. American star Kristen Stewart took on the role of Prince William’s mother in Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama, Spencer.

The psychological drama focuses on Diana’s crisis during the Christmas of 1991, as she considers divorcing her husband, the then Prince Charles and turning her back on The Royal Family. For her portrayal, Kristen was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress, as well as a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award.

But five years after its release, Kristen, 35, admits that she still feels the late Princess, who died aged 36, on August 31, 1997. Kristen also disclosed that whenever she drives around Paris, she feels the presence of royalty and can’t stop thinking of her.

Diana tragically died in Paris due to injuries she sustained when her car crashed into the Pont de l’Alma while travelling with her reported boyfriend, Dodi Fayed. By the end of filming, Kristen says, like Diana, she felt “a bit like a shell” and was “haunted” by the woman who was once set to become Queen.

“I still am,” she said in a new interview. Speaking to The Telegraph, Stewart said: “I can’t drive round this city, and Paris for that matter, without thinking about her. All the love that poured out of this woman… I can cry about her at any moment.”

Taking on the role, Kristen claims that Larraín saw “a little bit of an overlap” in her experience being similar to that of Diana’s; she added: “There was something about my energy.” Her resemblance to the late Princess was helped by vocal and movement coaches, as well as a wardrobe filled with Chanel gowns. “The clothes were part of the armour, they allowed me to step into her physical space and create images of her in this prison of a castle, yet wearing lavish, stunning pieces of clothing. That is a poem in itself,” she said.

Diana was famously a fan of Chanel; however, following her divorce from Charles in 1996, she made an effort to reduce what she wore from the luxury brand. The interlocking CC logo was a reminder of Charles’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, his now second wife and Queen. Designer Jayson Brundson, who worked with Diana, claims she explicitly couldn’t wear a pair of Chanel shoes.

The Princess allegedly said: “No, I can’t wear linked Cs, the double C, it was Camilla and Charles.” But while she chose not to wear anything with the double-C monogram, Diana did choose to wear Chanel clothing.

Before Diana and Charles separated, their marriage was plagued by rumours of infidelity, with leaked phone calls between the now King and Queen emerging. In 1994, the monarch owned up to adultery but said that it happened after “it became clear that the marriage had irretrievably broken down.”

While Diana was taken to the hospital for treatment after the devastating crash, her boyfriend Dodi and the driver of the car, Henri Paul, died instantly. In 2008, an inquest into Diana’s death found that both Henri Paul and the paparazzi contributed to her death.

The jury decided that Diana and Dodi had been unlawfully killed by Henri, who had been found to have alcohol in his system at the time of the accident.
