Mariah Carey has been accused of lip syncing during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. The singer, 56, perhaps best known for her festive earworm All I Want For Christmas Is You, was chosen to start the proceedings of the major sporting event in Milan with a rendition of classic track Volare.
The Grammy Award-winning star donned a flowing white gown for the occasion but fans were quick to social media to accuse the songstress of not actually singing live.
One fan wrote on X: “Mariah Carey looks bored of lip syncing. This could be remedied by actually singing,” and another said: “Thought it was the fault of the sound engineer as well, but clearly the mic/audio does work as we can see from the lady in black dress Think Mariah is just awful at lip syncing and incredibly lazy.”

A third raged: “Witnessing Mariah Carey at the Olympics2026 Opening Ceremony…she is stiff, lip syncing and looks like she’s reading off a teleprompter!” A fourth admitted: “I found Mariah’s performance underwhelming at best!”
A fifth said: “The worst part is that Mariah Carey isn’t even trying to hide the fact she’s lip syncing,” and a sixth said: “Some of the most awful lip syncing by Mariah Carey [facepalm emoji] come on Italy, you have your own singers!!’
Despite the immediate backlash, some fans were delighted to see the Always Be My Baby singer. One wrote: “Mariah Carey is one beautiful lady!”
Another said: “It was fantastic. Enjoyed Mariah’s Volare! And man, that national anthem. So beautiful! I had tears.” A third joked: “Good luck to the U.S. team at the Olympics but I only showed up for Mariah and that’s it. Lol.”
This is not the first time Mariah, who has sold some 200 million records since she found fame in the early 1990s, has been accused of not singing live. In the build up to the festive period in 2024, Mariah was performing her signature track at an NFL game, and fans blasted her for appearing not to sing live.
On Twitter, one fan expressed disappointment over a pre-recorded Mariah Carey performance, stating: “we’re not even getting mariah singing live?? f*** did i tune in for. prerecorded AND lip syncing.” [sic]
Another fan echoed the sentiment, writing: “A Mariah Carey pre-recorded lip sync performance #NFLonNetflix. They could’ve kept that.”
Others chimed in with similar complaints, saying, “Why the hell is Mariah Carey performance PRE RECORDED? ! Like that’s a HUGGGEEE let down! ” and “Is it me or was Mariah performance lip synced.” [sic]
