Rock icon Neil Young has announced his decision to cancel the UK and European leg of his tour, sharing the news via a statement on his website on Friday night to explain to decision

An iconic rock star has issued an apology as he announced the decision to cancel his European and UK tour.

Neil Young announced the news as he shared a statement on his website, revealing it is “not the time” for him to be playing live shows, ahead of his string of shows across Europe and the UK in the summer with his band The Chrome Hearts. The 80 year old announced the news in a statement in which he said he had decided to “take a break”.

The statement read: “I have decided to take a break and will not be touring Europe this time. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets. I’m sorry to let you down, but this is not the time.

“I do love playing live and being with you and The Chrome Hearts. Love, Neil. Be well,” he wrote as he signed the message off. The veteran musician was due to perform with his backing band The Chrome Hearts, who he started playing with in 2024, at a string of shows across the continent this summer.

The singer was expected to kick off his tour in June in the South West in Cornwall, and it was due to finish in a city in north-east Italy in July.

Young has won a string of accolades across his six-decade career, including two Grammys and nine Juno Awards.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, once in 1995 as a solo artist, and again as part of rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1997.

Young is best known for songs including Cinnamon Girl, Like A Hurricane and Rockin’ In The Free World, and last year he headlined at Glastonbury and took to the stage at BST Hyde Park.

It comes just a few months after Neil removed his music from streaming giant Amazon Music in order to ‘save America’. In a lengthy statement, which saw him urge his fans to “buy local” he announced the move and shared his reasons behind the decision.

In his statement, he wrote: “Forget Amazon and Whole Foods [supermarket chain owned by Amazon]. Forget Facebook. Buy local. Buy direct. [Jeff] Bezos supports this government. It does not support you or me.

“The time is here. Forget Amazon. Soon my music will not be there. It is easy to buy local. Support your community. Go to the local store.” He added: “Don’t go back to the big corporations who have sold out America. We all have to give up something to save America from the Corporate Control Age it is entering.

“They need you to buy from them. Don’t. They shut down our government. Your income. Your safety. Your family’s health security. Take America Back.

“Together, stop buying from the big corporations, support local business. Do the right thing. Show who you are.” Neil is referencing the US government shutdown after the Republican and Democratic parties didn’t agree to pass a bill funding government services.
