Robbie Williams addressed the Netflix documentary on his former band, Take That, as he brought his Long 90s tour to Liverpool’s Olympia last night
Robbie Williams discussed the recent Take That Netflix documentary during his performance. The 51 year old reflected on how he came across as he brought his Long 90s tour to Liverpool’s Olympia last night (February 6) before a sold-out audience.
In contrast to Robbie’s typical stadium and arena shows, he performed before fewer than 2,000 people. He delivered his latest album, Britpop, in its entirety. The record, which dropped in January, recently saw Robbie break records, surpassing The Beatles with the most official UK number one albums ever, according to the Official Charts Company.
Robbie also played through his debut solo album, Life Thru a Lens, from beginning to end. His first album included massive hits such as ‘Angels’ and Let Me Entertain You, which propelled the singer to worldwide fame.
During the gig, Robbie mentioned the Netflix documentary about his former band, Take That. He asked the audience: “Did anybody see the Take That documentary?”, reports the Liverpool Echo.
As the crowd roared, he said: “Episode two, I’m a right c*** aren’t I? I spent the last two weeks thinking ‘I shouldn’t have said that about Gary’.” The singer continued: “Honestly I’ve been going to bed with it, [thinking] ‘I was so mean, I shouldn’t have said that. I mean yeah I was upset and I was angry, but there was no way I should’ve carried on that long. I’m full of shame, I’m full of disappointment’.
“And then at the rehearsals for Barrowland singing this next song, which is ‘Ego a Go Go’, I thought ‘no boy band member has ever left and gone ‘they’re all c****’.” He told the audience: “Only me. Think about it”, before adding: “I went from feeling shamed to f****** ‘good for you little Robbie’.
The show included rare and never-before-seen archival footage from across their 35-plus year career, as well as new interview material with current members Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, plus archive appearances from Robbie and Jason Orange. The narrative will focus on the rise, fall, reconciliation, and resilience of the band in their own words.
Take That formed in Manchester in 1990, put together by manager Nigel Martin-Smith, who wanted a UK answer to New Kids on the Block. The original lineup included Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange. Early on, they struggled. Their first singles barely made a dent, and they were huge in clubs and with young fans before radio and critics took them seriously.
Everything changed with “It Only Takes a Minute” (1992). Suddenly, Take That were everywhere. Then then released hit albums Everything Changes (1993), Nobody Else (1995). Some of their biggest hits include “Pray” (their first UK No.1), “Relight My Fire”, “Back for Good” (global smash), “Never Forget” and “Sure”.
Take that became the biggest band in Britain, selling millions, dominating charts, magazines, and TV. Gary wrote almost all their hits, which gave them credibility beyond typical boyband fare. They also stood out by performing with live vocals, writing their own songs and gradually shifting from dance-pop to more mature pop-rock.
Robbie left the band back In 1995 mid-way through the band’s tour as he struggled with fame, mental health, and substance use. He also clashed creatively and personally with the rest of the group. The remaining four carried on and released “Never Forget”, but the momentum was faltering. In February 1996, they shocked the nation by announcing their split.
This week, Robbie became an internet sensation after posting a video featuring Greasby teacher Jemma Williamson. The 48 year old appeared in the latest Take That documentary which landed on Netflix last week.
In historical footage, Jemma appears with a group of mates outside HMV in Chester during the early 1990s. The then 14 year old seizes the opportunity with camera crews present to try and pass her phone number to Robbie Williams.
Robbie shared a clip of the incident on his own social media platforms, and tried ringing the number, which has now been watched over three million times.
