Drake Maye’s first Super Bowl has officially entered the disaster phase.
The Patriots quarterback lost a fumble right toward the end of the third quarter with the Patriots trailing the Seahawks by 12 points in Super Bowl 2026.
The turnover in New England territory, which set up Seattle at the Patriots’ 37-yard line and Seattle may have put the game away with a touchdown to take a 19-0 lead.
“It has not been a good night at all for Drake Maye,” Cris Collinsworth said ahead of New England’s drive following Seattle’s touchdown.
“I said in the open Drake Maye has to be great tonight, he has not.”
Maye followed with a touchdown pass on his next drive to slice the deficit to 19-7, but it may prove to be too little too late.
This is Maye’s first appearance in the Super Bowl and it feels like this game will be used as the low point he uses as motivation in years to come.
For all the joys he experienced in sensational second season in the NFL that had him in the running for NFL MVP, which went to the Rams’ Matthew Stafford, Maye has endured the opposite in this game.
The Patriots’ nine full possessions, which excludes Maye’s kneeling to end the first half, have resulted in eight punts and the aforementioned turnover.

Maye was just 8-for-18 for 60 yards — not a misprint — through those 10 total drives.
The Seahawks’ defensive line has consistently won in the trenches against an overmatched New England offensive line, which has prevented Maye from getting into a rhythm.
He had taken five sacks, marking the fourth straight postseason game in which he has been sacked at least four times.
Maye has not been able to run like he did in the AFC Championship game against Denver, tallying just 15 yards on three attempts.
His receiving unit has not won its battle, with Maye also missing plenty of passes.
He finally had a strong drive after falling behind 19-0, connecting with Mack Hollins to give the Patriots some life with 12:27 remaining.
