TEHRAN – Iran has collected about 9.0 million cubic meters (mcm) per day of associated and flared gas over the past 15 to 16 months, bringing total daily collection to around 16 mcm, Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said on Monday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Tous gas field development project and the Dehloran gas pressure boosting station, Paknejad said more than 9.0 mcm per day of the collected gas was achieved under the current administration, describing the figure as significant.
He said the oil ministry is focusing on gas field development and the recovery of associated and flared gas in line with targets set under the country’s seventh development plan.
Paknejad said the Tous gas field project in Khorasan Razavi province and the Dehloran pressure boosting station in Ilam province were launched to help address supply constraints, particularly in northeastern Iran, where demand surges during winter often lead to pressure drops at the end of the gas transmission network.
He said initial output from the Tous field has increased production by about 1.5 million cubic meters per day, with a further 1.5 million cubic meters per day expected next year, lifting total output to 3.0 mcm per day.
The minister put total investment in the Tous project at more than 100 million euros, adding that it created around 150 direct jobs and 400 indirect jobs, largely using local labor.
Paknejad said around 7.0 mcm per day of associated and flared gas had been collected before the current administration took office, while about 9.0 million cubic meters per day was added during the past 15 to 16 months.
He said flared gas volumes stood at about 51.5 mcm per day at the start of the current administration. Although higher crude oil output added roughly 5.7 mcm per day of new associated gas, about 7.2 mcm per day of associated gas and around 2.0 mcm per day of refinery flare gas have since been recovered.
Looking ahead, Paknejad said 12 contracts aimed at collecting associated and flared gas are expected to deliver an additional 8.0 to 9.0 mcm per day within the next 15 to 16 months, alongside the shutdown of about 32 flare stacks.
