Noel Gallagher is heading back to the BRIT Awards and insists he deserves his award and will punch anyone who says otherwise to his face

Noel Gallagher has blasted criticism around him receiving a Brit Award later this month – and challenged other songwriters to a fight on the red carpet.

The 58-year-old was a shock choice for the songwriter of the year prize. The Oasis star will accept the gong in Manchester, at the Co-op Live on 28th February, just three months after the Don’t Look Back in Anger band’s epic, 41-date Oasis Live ’25 comeback tour came to an end.

Asked about the controversy around the prize going his way in a year when he hadn’t released new material, Noel said: I haven’t written a song for two years. I’m not sure how I’ve got away with that one, but I’ll take it.”

Speaking on TalkSport, Host Andy Goldstein said: “Some people are questioning the fact that you’ve won it and haven’t written a song.”

Noel replied: “Well, I think the BRITs is all based on record sales, and I’m not sure there was another single songwriter that sold… I mean, we sold a million records last year. Didn’t even get off the couch and I’m not sure there’s a songwriter that can match that. But you know, if anybody’s got a problem with it, meet me there. We’ll have it out on the red carpet.

“If any of those wet wipes songwriting teams, all 11 of them, want to write a song between the lot of them, want to have it out on the red carpet, I’m there.”

Later in the interview, he added: “I’m in the studio now, so I’d better do something out soon. If I am honest I think they just were desperate to get someone from Oasis up there cos it is in Manchester.”

On whether his brother Liam will be at the Brits with him, he said: “…we’re just organising tickets for the Carabao Cup final today, but no, I haven’t spoke to him about that, no.”

Noel has won plenty of awards for his songwriting in the past. At the 2013 Ivor Novello Awards, the 58-year-old star took home the prestigious Outstanding Song Collection award.

Noel will follow the likes of Ed Sheeran, Kid Harpoon, RAYE and Charli XCX when he picks up the Songwriter of the Year prize at the Brits. The ceremony will be broadcast live from Co-op Live on Saturday 28th February, exclusively on ITV and ITVX.

Comedian Jack Whitehall will return to host the show, and it will be the first time the ceremony is held outside London in its near 50-year history.

On TalkSport Noel went on to speak about his beloved Manchester City. He said he still felt Arsenal were favourites for the Premier League title and would most likely go onto win the the league. He also said they were favourites to win the Carabao cup final when the two sides meet in March but he hopes his beloved City will win on the day.
