Take That star Mark Owen has opened up about the future of the band, who are still going strong after over three decades in the business, but fears it ‘could end tomorrow’
Mark Owen worries Take That “could end tomorrow”. The musician, who will later hit the road with his bandmates, Gary Barlow and Howard Donald, has opened up after a new Netflix documentary explores the rise of the meteoric group, which burst onto the scene in the early Nineties.
But over the course of their impressive career, the band were left stunned when Robbie Williams announced his departure in 1995, one year before the group disbanded. Howard, Mark, Gary and Jason Orange continued as a quartet before they eventually reunited in 2005.
However, in 2014, it was announced that Jason had decided to step away, leaving his bandmates to continue as a trio. Despite two members quitting the band, Take That have remained one of the busiest groups in the music business, but this doesn’t mean they don’t worry about their future.
“I think Rob and Jason made brave decisions,” Mark said, adding: “We still think it could end tomorrow and we go back to the day job.” Speaking to Nicki Champman, their former publicist on Pop Idols for Magic Radio, Howard said of the band splitting in 1996: “Working full on for six years and then all of a sudden it stops… I spent a lot of depressing mornings watching This Morning.”
However, one thing he could have never anticipated was Robbie not returning until 2010. Instead, the band thought that Williams would make a swift return to the group.
“We thought he [Robbie] was going to be back, we never knew it was for good really,” Howard said, before continuing: “Robbie was a young boy when he left and you didn’t think about where his head was at.
“Losing Jason was a tough time for the three of us… Even though I knew it was coming. I feel like he’d had enough of the fame and being recognised.” And despite their schedules being jam-packed in their heyday, Howard admits he’d love to go back in time, even for just a week, to embrace the moments which are now “a blur”.
He told his former publicist: “I would love the chance to go back [to 1993] for a week, but that’s as much as I would want to do. It was just a bit of a blur…
“As much as we enjoyed each other’s company we also got on each others nerves. I used to pretend I was going home to see my Mum when, in fact, I was going home to see my girlfriend.”
But Gary admits that he believed the group were being “stitched up” when they reunited in 2005 with an ITV documentary. He explained: “We were all scared to death and convinced that ITV were trying to stitch us up.
“I never really felt like I was in a band in the 90s, I always felt like I was a solo artist in a band, but when we got back together, I never needed these guys more than when I needed them then, and it felt strong.”
And as the group prepare for The Circus Live – Summer 2026 tour, fans could also be treated to new music. The band haven’t released any singles since the 2024 track, All Wrapped Up. “We’ve been writing for about a year for hopefully a new record in the fall,” Gary hinted.
