The guitarist and songwriter who founded the American rock band Cake has died aged 56.

Greg Brown passed away after a short illness, according to a statement on the band’s official Instagram account. On Saturday February 7 the band shared a black and white image of Greg with his guitar alongside the sad update to their 73,000 followers.

The caption read: : “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Greg Brown’s passing after a brief illness. Greg was an integral part of CAKE’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg.”

Fans took to the comments to show their love, one wrote: “oh man. He invented a guitar sound and style like no other. His riffs still blow my mind. Rip.”

Another commented: “Damn that’s so sad, one of the greatest guitar players in my personal opinion. He will live on in the history he’s made and the musicians he’s inspired. Rest in peace brother.”

A third wrote: “RIP Greg Brown, the founding lead guitarist for Cake. I absolutely loved his playing. His style was always so tasteful and appropriate for the song. He was one of my heros when I picked up the guitar in the late 90’s.”

Heartbreakingly, Adri Brown commented: “The best dad I could’ve asked for.”

Greg founded the band alongside John McCrea and Vince DiFiore in 1991. Current members of the band include guitarist Xan McCurdy, bassist Daniel McCallum and drummer Todd Roper.

He played guitar on the band’s first two albums – Motorcade of Generosity in 1994 and Fashion Nugget in 1996. But Greg left the band before the third album was released.
