'The Mummy 4' Release Date, Brendan Fraser And Rachel Weisz Are Back To Confront The Tombs' Fury

The Mummy film franchise, which had Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the lead, is finally getting a fourth entry after a long wait of 20 years. A fourth film, also featuring Brendan and Rachel going for another adventure, is releasing in 2028. Detailed information about the storyline for The Mummy 4 has not been revealed for now, except that Brendan and Rachel would reprise their roles as ‘Rick O’Connell’ and ‘Evelyn Carnahan,’ respectively.

The franchise was originally launched in 1932 with Karl Freund’s The Mummy. It continued with four more entries until 1955. The franchise got a reboot in 1959 with Terence Fisher’s The Mummy, followed by The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, The Mummy’s Shroud, and Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb. However, Brendan and Rachel’s films built a different kind of fanbase, starting from their first entry in 1999. The reason was that it provided non-stop entertainment in a crisp runtime.

The Mummy 4 release date confirmed by Universal Pictures

The Mummy

According to Variety, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence Productions have been chosen to direct The Mummy 4. Universal Pictures has set a release date for May 19, 2028. The film will be produced by Sean Daniel, and the screenplay will be written by David Coggeshall. Apart from Sean Daniel, The Mummy 4 is being produced by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein. As mentioned, Brendan Fraser has been confirmed to return in the lead role along with Rachel Weisz. The former will be an executive producer for the film this time, followed by Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart of Hivemind.

The Mummy 4 reportedly entered development a long time ago

The Mummy

Reports of The Mummy 4 initially emerged in November 2025. However, Universal Pictures did not respond to the same during that period. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s involvement was confirmed at that time, along with the directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Brendan Fraser had previously expressed interest in returning as Rick O’Connell on various occasions. Back in 2022, Brendan claimed in an interview that he was open to returning to the franchise, despite being unaware of how it would work.

The Mummy

Five years before the interview, Universal Pictures tried to launch the Dark Universe with The Mummy in 2017, featuring Tom Cruise. However, the film did not work. Brendan Fraser addressed the reasons behind the film’s failure in his 2022 interview, saying that Tom’s film was more of a horror movie instead of being a thrill ride. Brendan mentioned that Tom’s film was missing an “ingredient” that was common in the films where Brendan worked. Notably, the Dark Universe plans were cancelled after the failure of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy.

The Mummy

The first film, released in 1999, was a remake of Karl Freund’s work, released in 1932. The 1999 film was directed by Stephen Sommers. The main storyline focused on ‘Evelyn Carnahan’ and her brother ‘Jonathan’ seeking help from ‘Rick O’Connell’ to find the City of the Dead, called Hamunaptra. However, ‘Evelyn’ accidentally awakens a cursed priest, ‘Imhotep,’ after reading the Book of the Dead. The sequel, The Mummy Returns, was released in 2001, marking the return of the majority of the cast, along with director Stephen Sommers.

The Mummy

The Mummy Returns featured a cult trying to resurrect ‘Imhotep.’ ‘Rick’ and ‘Evelyn’s’ efforts to stop the cult invite more trouble, including their son being kidnapped and new threats emerging in the form of the ‘Scorpion King’ and the army of ‘Anubis.’ The third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, did not feature Rachel Weisz and was directed by Rob Cohen instead of Stephen. Maria Bello replaced Rachel as ‘Evelyn’ this time, with the film focusing on ‘Rick’s’ family working to defeat the Dragon Emperor after a military faction decides to resurrect the cursed emperor for their own needs. The film was released in 2008.
