Match Preview for Hull v Chelsea

It will be an emotional occasion for Liam Rosenior when he goes back to Hull with Chelsea tomorrow night, although the Blues boss says he will take a strong side in the hope of knocking his former employers out of the FA Cup.

Rosenior spent five years as a player with the Tigers before returning as head coach in 2022. He narrowly missed out on guiding them to the Championship play-offs in the 2023/24 season before being sacked.

He rebuilt his career at Strasbourg, who like Chelsea are owned by BlueCo, paving the way for him to take over at Stamford Bridge last month.

Rosenior has made a strong start in West London, although their latest Premier League game saw them squander a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with lowly Leeds.

The 41-year-old is relishing the return to Humberside.

He said: “Hull City is very special for me. My grandma was a season ticket holder. I’ve got my family going up as the club means a lot to me for many reasons. Hopefully we can put on a really good show, it will be amazing to go back.

“Without Hull, without the experience of being there as a player and as a manager, I would not be sitting here. I’ve got a lot to thank the club for and I had some amazing times there, both as a player and as a coach.

“It’s really good to see them doing so well in the league. It’s a great club, great people, great fans, a great city. It’s going to be an emotional one for me to go back.”

That’s not to say Rosenior will put previous ties in the way of Chelsea progressing to the fifth round.

“This is going to be a difficult game and I want to do well in this competition,” he added. “I don’t see it any differently than a Premier League game or a Champions League game.

“We will go there with a team I think will be good enough to win the game. I will want to take this game really seriously. We’re going to have to because they’re in good form and used to winning games at the moment.”

Hull have enjoyed a fine season under Sergej Jakirović with the Croatian’s side sitting in fourth place in the Championship.

They do come into the Chelsea clash on the back of a defeat, however, after going down at home to Bristol City last weekend.

Charlie Hughes and Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer are both doubts for Hull. Cody Drameh is fit again while new signings Paddy McNair, Kieran Dowell, Lewis Koumas and Yu Hirakawa should all feature at some stage.

Chelsea will be without Marc Cucurella but Reece James could play. Central defender Mamadou Sarr, recalled from his loan deal at Strasbourg, is in line to start.

Enzo Fernandez is likely to be rested.
