The much-awaited film O Romeo has finally hit the screens today. While the film’s release marks an important moment for director Vishal Bhardwaj and lead actor Shahid Kapoor, it also carries a special emotional significance. Sutapa Sikdar, wife of the late actor Irrfan Khan, took to social media to share a moving tribute, revealing that the project was a dream long nurtured by Vishal Bhardwaj and her late husband.

In a heartfelt comment on Vishal Bhardwaj’s Instagram post, Sutapa Sikdar expressed her joy at seeing the filmmaker’s vision come to life. She reminded fans that the film’s origins date back years, to a time when it was titled Sapna Didi and was intended to star Irrfan Khan.

She wrote, “Aapko bahut bahut Mubarak! Bahut Pehle aapne yeh sapna dekha tha tab iss ka naam sapna didi tha . Aapka Sapna Pura hua Aar aap sapne dekhte dekhte Romeo ban gaye !! Aap ko salaam aur Duniya mein Zulm Khatam hone ka Sapna dekhte rehna chahiye ! All the best @vishalrbhardwaj @rekha_bhardwaj @irrfan is sending you best wishes from heaven (Congratulations to you! A long time ago you had dreamt of this film when it was called Sapna Didi. Today that dream came true and turns out, it was because of you Romeo! Hats off to you and the relentless pursuit of dreams to end the violence in the world)”.

Vishal Bhardwaj, who previously collaborated with Irrfan on iconic films like Maqbool, 7 Khoon Maaf, and Haider, shared his own emotional note ahead of the release. He expressed a sense of deep pride in the project, regardless of its commercial or critical response. He wrote, “Before the critics speak and before the box office delivers its verdict, I feel compelled to share how deeply proud I am of this film.” He described the film as a release for his pent-up anguish regarding societal violence, adding, “In O Romeo, through my protagonist, I slash throats, split skulls, and blow the brains of the monsters I cannot confront in real life.”

O Romeo is inspired by a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, focusing on the gangster Hussain Ustara, played by Shahid Kapoor. The film also stars Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, and Disha Patani, with a special appearance by Vikrant Massey and Tamannaah Bhatia. Though originally planned with Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone, the project eventually evolved into the Shahid Kapoor-starrer releasing today.
