Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has triggered intense speculation on the internet. From online theories to social media discussions on an insider involvement, netizens have explored countless possibilities behind her mysterious disappearance. For those unaware, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie had suddenly disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31, 2026, in what authorities believe to be a kidnapping. After the case made national headlines, there has been a lot of speculation about the involvement of Nancy Guthrie’s elder daughter, Annie, and her husband, Tommaso. However, the Pima County Sheriff has given his final verdict in the same.

The Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, and his department have officially released a statement to make clear that Nancy Guthrie’s family members are not suspects in her disappearance. The statement noted that the three kids of Nancy, including Annie Guthrie, Savannah Guthrie, and Camron Guthrie, and their respective spouses, have no role in the case. Instead, they have completely coordinated with the department for investigation. In the statement’s words:

“To be clear…the Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case.”

Meanwhile, the authorities have also called out the rumours and accusations directed at Nancy’s loved ones. The Sheriff’s Office described such speculation as “misleading and cruel.” Instead, the statement pointed out that Nancy’s family members are themselves victims of the tragedy. The statement urged the public and the media to act responsibly and not spread unverified claims. According to Fox 10, officials reaffirmed that investigators have not named any suspects publicly and continue to follow evidence-based leads. In Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos’ words:

“To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, but it is also cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple…please, I’m begging you the media to honor your profession and report with some sense of compassion and professionalism.”

For the those unaware, the speculations around the possible involvement of a family member in Nancy Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni’s case intensified due to the fact that Tommaso Cioni, Nancy’s son-in-law, was reportedly the last person to see her alive after dropping her home following a family dinner. Additionally, journalist, Ashleigh Banfield claimed that one of her unverified sources suggested he could be a person of interest, fueling internet speculations. However, authorities clarified that these claims lacked any tangible evidence. 

Did a ‘Burglary’ attempt go wrong, leading to Nancy Guthrie’s abduction? 

Apart from addressing the speculation about family involvement, the Sheriff’s Office also denied the alleged reports, which suggested that Nancy was abducted after a burglary attempt at her home went wrong. On the other hand, the officials have confirmed that the investigators have never publicly hinted at the possibility. They revealed that they are “actively investigating” the case and warned against the spread of misinformation. Furthermore, the officials emphasised that conclusions in the Nancy Guthrie case will be drawn only on verified forensic evidence and investigative findings, not on rumours or assumptions.

What is the latest development in Nancy Guthrie’s ongoing search? 

On the other hand, both the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are actively looking for Nancy Guthrie with urgency, especially due to her fragile health condition. According to the BBC and law enforcement updates, investigators recently found a black glove near her home. It seems to match the one worn by a masked suspect seen on doorbell camera footage. 

Subsequently, the FBI is currently analysing its DNA evidence, which may help identify the individual responsible. Furthermore, they believe that the suspect in the case, the masked man seen in the camera footage at Nancy’s home, was approximately 5’9″ to 5’10” tall with a medium build, seen carrying a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. In turn, the FBI has increased the reward for information leading to Nancy’s location to USD 100,000, prompting the public to come forward with credible tips.
