A Grammy Award-winning songwriter has died. The songwriter, who was behind hits by the likes of Madonna, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, had been battling cancer.
His attorney announced that he died at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, just days before he was set to turn 76 on February 26. Billy’s family described the late star as a “visionary lyricist, devoted husband, loving father,” and “one of the most influential songwriters of his era.”
A statement from his family read: “Billy Steinberg’s life was a testament to the enduring power of a well-written song – and to the idea that honesty, when set to music, can outlive us all.
“Yet those closest to him knew that what mattered most was not recognition, but connection – the magic of hearing a crowd sing back something that once lived only in his notebook.” Meanwhile, his attorney, Laurie Soriano, said that he had been battling cancer.
Billy had been responsible for the likes of True Colours by Cyndi Lauper, Like A Virgin by Madonna, Eternal Flame by the Bangles, and The Pretenders’ hit I’ll Stand By You. He’d also penned I Touch Myself by The Divinyls.
Tributes have since poured in, with one fan writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The Alouders on Reddit is saddened to announce the news on the passing of Billy Steinberg, who is famous for songwriting and composing iconic Whitney Houston and Madonna songs. He composed I’ll Stand by You for both The Pretenders and Girls Aloud versions.”
