Mary Lou McDonald, president of the Irish republican party Sinn Féin, has confirmed that the party will not attend St Patrick’s Day events at the White House for a second consecutive year, Al Maydeen reported Tuesday.
Citing the “dire” situation in Gaza and the West Bank, McDonald stated that despite ceasefire talks, Israeli attacks and what she termed “genocide” continue.
She emphasized that the party must use its voice to demand that international law be upheld.
While McDonald noted that the deep historical bonds between Ireland and the U.S. remain vital—having been critical to the peace process and the campaign for Irish reunification—she insisted these relationships must not preclude standing for peace and justice.
First Minister Michelle O’Neill supported the boycott, framing her decision as a matter of “humanity” and refusing to participate while the international community “turns its head” from Palestinian displacement.
Since October 2023, Israel has killed over 72,000 Palestinians and caused the injury of over 171,000 others in the Gaza Strip, according to the latest figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health and international monitoring agencies.
