In a candid conversation at the SCREEN Masterclass, John Abraham opened up about the hurdles he faced as an outsider entering the film industry. John, who transitioned from a successful modelling career to acting, revealed that his journey has been marked by constant scrutiny since he first stepped onto the silver screen in 2003. Talking about the landscape of the industry two decades ago, John mentioned that outsiders were a rarity. He highlighted that before his entry, only a few had successfully made the leap. John said, “I have probably been criticised the most in this industry, from the time I started. When I came in 2003, there were no outsiders. Before that, only Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar (entered the film industry).”  He explained the scale of the backlash he received, adding, “The amount of criticism I have gone through, nobody else has faced that in my time.”

Despite the pressure, John maintained a singular focus to survive the competitive environment. Describing his mindset, he said, “For me, it was simple. I was like a horse with blinkers. I could only see in front and didn’t expect.” John also attributed his longevity to his personal integrity and his decision to distance himself from typical industry PR machinery. He explained, “I have never had a publicist. I don’t go out there to feed stories in the media; it could make me vulnerable as well, but I think people know my integrity and where I come from.”

John also spoke warmly about his rapport with male contemporaries like Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, and Abhishek Bachchan. Rather than viewing them as rivals, he views their professional relationship as collaborative. He said, “The best way is to train your mind to know that you are not competing but complementing. They look at me as someone who complements their process, and I look at them the same way.”

Looking ahead, John expressed interest in returning to the comedy genre and mentioned he would be happy to join a sequel to No Smoking if it ever materialized. John was last seen in the action-thriller Tehran and recently backed the documentary Oslo: A Tale Of Promise.
