YouTubers Gary Hanna and Danny Macklin travelled to London to sample Gordon Ramsay’s The River Restaurant, spending £93 on their breakfast, but found themselves ‘annoyed’ by one thing
Two men who visited one of Gordon Ramsay’s luxury restaurants were left “annoyed” when they saw the bill. Content creators Gary Hanna and Danny Macklin travelled to The River Restaurant at The Savoy to sample its breakfast menu.
Gary, known as Gary Eats online, opted for the omelette Arnold Bennett for £20, named after the Stoke-on-Trent-born author. The novelist would order the dish, which contains haddock, parmesan, and comte cheese, ahead of his arrival at the restaurant when stopping at the Savoy Hotel to write his book Imperial Palace.
Danny meanwhile went for the more traditional approach ordering a “quintessentially British” breakfast for £24. While the Yorkshireman was impressed with the dish, he did instantly notice one of his own personal bugbears.
In a YouTube video, Danny said: “I don’t care if I’m in The Savoy, if it’s Gordon Ramsay’s, I am not having beans in a pot. Mate, beans belong on a breakfast.
“When the bacon first came out, I thought it was vegan bacon, like that dog chew stuff, but on closer inspection it looked good. It looked quite nice the bacon and a decent sausage.”
He however concluded that the bacon was “cooked perfect”. Elsewhere, Danny was wooed by Gordon Ramsay’s black pudding, adding: “Up north we have black pudding from Bury and I’ve always said it’s one of the best.
“That, whatever black pudding that is, that’s probably the nicest black pudding I’ve ever had. That is amazing.”
The pair were both won over by the omelette Arnold Bennett. Gary said: “What I like is that it’s been put under the grill to give it colour. The eggs are really, really soft, so it’s a sort of firm omelette, really cheesy, and lots of haddock. It’s mindblowingly good. Really creamy. That to me is outrageous.”
Both Danny and Gary were also impressed with the French toast, served with maple syrup and orange mascarpone for £15. Danny however commented on how the dish is perfect for “Instagram pictures”.
Gary said: “What really makes it for me is the bread. And then the maple syrup combined with the orange is fantastic, it’s incredibly good.”
Danny added: “You’ve got the citrus hit of the orange segment and then the sourness that comes from the peel together with the sweetness of the cream. That is Paddington bear’s dream.”
Paddington, created by British author Michael Bond, is known for his love of marmalade sandwiches. Danny continued: “If he come here, that little bear, this is what he would be having.”
Despite being won over by the breakfast, Gary says he was left “a little bit annoyed” when he saw the bill. It came as they discovered their sourdough toast set them back £9.
Gary said: “I’m saying that’s wrong, I’m a little bit annoyed by that. You should have the toast with the breakfast and with the Arnold Bennett because you need it.
“That’s a little bit naughty. Change that, add it to breakfast.”
Gary and Danny’s total bill, including a pot of tea, came to £93. Both men however scored the breakfast as a nine out of 10, knocking a point off for the toast charge.
The opening of Gordon’s latest restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay High, has been captured in his six-part Netflix series Being Gordon Ramsay. The series releases on the streaming platform today.
