A club owner who claims to have consumed “52,000 drinks” over a 13-year span, Wayne Lineker was left stunned when his eldest son informed him he could no longer handle a family responsibility
A tearful Wayne Lineker has shed light on a brutally honest conversation that he had with his son over his destructive lifestyle. Referred to as the “King of Ibiza,” Wayne – who is the younger brother of football legend Gary – is known for his business empire and hard-partying way of life.
A club owner who reportedly made a fortune from the club Ocean Beach and Linekers Bars, the father-of-four claims to have consumed a staggering “52,000 drinks” over a 13-year span.
However, it was the impact his lifestyle had on his family that would lead to something that hit him like a “ton of bricks”. In a recent interview, during which he said he has been sober for seven months, he spoke about the defining moment.
He explained that his eldest son, Duane, whom he described as a business partner and “like the father of the relationship”. He added that his son was the “sensible one” while he was “naughty”.
Wayne said that Duane tries to keep him “under control”, but he was left stunned one day when his eldest son informed him he could no longer handle a family responsibility.
He told The Times: “When I arrived at the office, Duane said: ‘Dad, we love you and we care about you, but we have to stop you picking the girls up from school’. That hit me like a ton of bricks.”
Wayne routinely collected his two granddaughters in his Bentley each week, but Duane believed it was no longer safe to do so. His father “got it straight away”.
A tearful Wayne revealed: “It must have been very difficult for him to have that conversation, but I got it straight away.
“Even if I was sober when I picked the girls up at three or four in the afternoon, I’d still have alcohol or drugs in my system from the night before. He made the right decision.”
In another story related to the effects of his drinking, Wayne recounted how his youngest son, Freddie, a DJ, had been staying at his villa and was due to set off on an early flight to Zante.
Wayne explained that Freddie could hear him moving about and was not able to sleep at 5am. He entered his father’s room and gave him a “cuddle”, crying and saying he didn’t want him to “go”.
It was apparent to his son that his father was endangering his health with his alcohol use, according to the outlet, and Wayne “could see” the impact of his actions on his family.
Speaking to ITV hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain last month, Wayne opened up about his choice to switch to a clean way of living, declaring that “enough was enough”.
He said: “Enough was enough for me after 40 years in the industry. Drinking pretty much every day for all that time took its toll.”
