Hilary Knight kept the United States women’s hockey team’s hopes and dreams alive on Thursday.
She also made some American history.
In the moment, though, she had no idea.
When she found out, she was in utter disbelief.
With just over three minutes left to play in the third period and the U.S. trailing by a goal, Knight redirected a shot from the point from Laila Edwards, getting the puck past Canadian goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens, who, up to that point, had been perfect.
Knight’s goal sent the game to overtime, where Megan Keller did the rest on a nifty goal to give the Americans the gold medal in a 2-1 thriller.
But Knight’s goal wasn’t just game-changing; it was historic.
It gave her career goals (15) and points (33), both of which are U.S. Olympic records.
After a wild win, the USA captain caught up with NBC’s Kathryn Tappen, who brought up the fact that Knight now owns two American records on her ledger.
“No way!” Knight said with her face in complete and total shock. “I’m just happy about the gold medal. Oh my gosh, this feels amazing.”
It’s been a week of milestones for Knight, who announced her engagement with American speedskater Brittany Bowe in the days before the gold medal contest.
Knight now has two gold medals and three silvers on her career resume and will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest American women’s hockey forward.

At 36, Knight has previously said this would be her final Winter Games.
And when she brought up the topic with reporters on Thursday, said she wants to revel in this moment.
“I’ve said this is my last Games, and I’ve had a heck of a week, personally,” she said. “It’s been an incredible ride, and I have to soak this all in because this room is just so special, this team is so special. This is the best U.S. hockey team I’ve ever been a part of.”
