Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane has died following a short battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The actor passed away on Thursday afternoon aged 53, surrounded by friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters. He had become a passionate advocate for awareness and research for ALS following his diagnosis last year.

Eric continued to work despite his ill-health, but was too unwell to attend the Emmy Awards last month. The father of two, born in San Francisco, California, enjoyed a 35-year career, during which time he was in Grey’s Anatomy, Charmed, Euphoria and many more US TV series and films.

A statement from the actor’s family reads: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Speaking on Good Morning America in June, a tearful Eric said: “I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening… It’s not a dream. I don’t think this is the end of my story… I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”

Eric portrayed Dr Mark Sloan — aka McSteamy — in Grey’s Anatomy between 2006 and 2012, returning for a cameo in 2021. He was in nine episodes of fantasy drama Charmed in 2003 and 2004.

And his career accelerated, with roles in a variety of programmes since his departure from Grey’s Anatomy. Eric continued to film psychological teen drama Euphoria, a HBO show, even despite his illness. The third series, of which Eric is part, is yet to air.

Speaking about his ALS journey, defiant Eric had said: “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” The entertainer, though, lost his fight with the disease, around 5,000 new cases of which are diagnosed in the US every year.

Born in 1972 in San Francisco, Eric stumbled into acting. However, his passion developed after appearing in a school production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons and, in 1991 at the age of 19, he starred in teen sitcom Saved by the Bell. It was a cameo role that would lead to a illustrious career that would span more than three decades.
