Death in Paradise actor Tahj Miles admitted he was initially nervous about working with his co-star Don Warrington on the BBC drama
Death in Paradise actor Tahj Miles has opened up about meeting co-star, Don Warrington, for the first time after being “scared” beforehand. Tahj, who portrays police officer Marlon Pryce in the beloved BBC series, joined the cast in 2020, nine years after Don kicked off his stint as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.
Looking back on getting to know his co-star, Tahj, 24, said he was “almost scared” to meet him at first, but his worries quickly disappeared.
“He’s amazing – he’s everything you think Don Warrington would be like,” he shared.
“I remember when I first joined the show, I was almost scared to meet him. I was like, ‘What’s he going to be like?’ But he was really, really cool.”
Recalling their first interaction, Tahj mentioned that away from the cameras, Don would discuss “football and random stuff” with him.
Yet when the cameras started rolling, he noted how his colleague would shift into a more focused mindset.
“When it comes to shooting scenes, he’ll be all serious and focused,” Tahj explained.
During an interview on the Bad Wilf YouTube channel, he went on to say: “But if you want to go up to him, have a laugh and start talking about random things, he’ll do that too.
“You don’t have to be scared being around Don Warrington on set and think, ‘I don’t want to mess up in front of him,’ because he’ll come and have a chat.”
Tahj said he had also learned many things while in Don’s presence.
“He’s like an encyclopaedia of acting,” he remarked. “Just watching him, you’ll always pick up on something new that could change your entire career and how you work. It’s brilliant.”
The actor shared his thoughts ahead of the latest series of the BBC drama returning to screens.
Based on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) and his colleagues return to investigate a series of puzzling deaths.
The new series also welcomes back Don, whose character caused concern amongst viewers last year when he seemed to exit the programme.
Commissioner Selwyn Patterson initially opted to leave the island following the loss of his role. While he was subsequently offered reinstatement, he chose instead to travel to the UK to visit his daughter.
Numerous viewers worried that this signalled the character’s permanent departure, but Selwyn reappeared in the Christmas special and continues as part of the cast.
Speaking about the response to his supposed departure, Don told The i Newspaper: “That was just the storyline. The producers thought it would be interesting to have Selwyn reach some kind of crisis and then, after dealing with it, return.
“There was no Machiavellian intent – but it was certainly very nice to know my character had penetrated people’s consciousness to that extent.”
Death in Paradise continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
