“It’s been a really strong start to the year. It wasn’t easy. I had to be strong mentally with my team. I’m just playing great tennis and I’m really happy about this week. This trophy means a lot to me.”
Pegula beats Svitolina to win Dubai Championships
Jessica Pegula dominated Elina Svitolina to win the Dubai Tennis Championships, the American triumphing in straight sets, 6-2 6-4.
Pegula raced into a 3-0 lead over the Ukrainian in the first set, before the former US Open finalist had to defend two break points to go 5-1 up.
Pegula then claimed the crucial break in the fifth game of the second set as she went on to win her 10th title on tour, snapping a three-match losing streak in WTA 1000 finals.
In doing so, she also handed Svitolina a first defeat in a WTA 1000 final.
“Speechless after that fight,” Pegula said. “I was really trying to put myself out there, and I was playing like there is no tomorrow, just trying to put all the effort in.”
