Former BRIT Award nominee Kenny Thomas has opened up about Noel Gallagher’s Songwriter of the Year victory, as well as his upcoming nationwide tour

Previous BRIT Award nominee Kenny Thomas has insisted Noel Gallagher is worthy of Songwriter of the Year. Oasis icon Noel, 58, will be handed the prestigious trophy at the award ceremony on Saturday.

For the first time in the history of the BRIT Awards, it will be held in Noel’s hometown – Manchester, at the state-of-the-art Co-op Live arena. But while Gallagher is still riding on a high following the hugely successful Oasis reunion tour last year, he faced criticism after being announced as the winner.

But in true Gallagher style, he brushed off any criticism and insisted that they meet him on the red carpet. Singer Kenny Thomas, who was nominated for Best British Newcomer and Best British Male Vocalist at the awards in 1992, told the Mirror: “You’ve got to love the Gallaghers, haven’t you? They just say it as it is.” He added of Noel’s win: “But why not? You know, he’s written some big records.

“[Oasis music] is being heavily streamed, obviously they did the big tour, and that is fed into the level of streaming. You’ve got people buying it as well as downloading it.”

Kenny added: “I do sometimes worry about the mentality of people that instantly go to the negative side of things instead of just saying, ‘Why don’t we celebrate this?’

“When I hear a new singer, even if it’s a singer who’s sort of creeping into my territory of that soul world and stuff like that, I love it. I really do. ‘m not threatened by any of it. I’ve been around a long time, and I do what I do, and it is what it is. But when someone new comes along, and they’ve got an exciting voice or write a great song, I think, wow, that’s fantastic.”

Next month, the singer known for hits including Thinking About Your Love is hitting the road for his Very Best Of tour, supported by none other than boyband, Damage.

He said of hitting the road: “I’m always excited about going out [on tour], I mean, in all honesty, I love the bit where I’m on stage. The bit that leads up to that, the travelling and the sound checking and all of that, all of the stuff, that can be quite draining. But we [the band] get through it.

“Once you get into the show itself and you’re on stage and the audience is there, then you know you’re in your own world, and it’s amazing. So that bit, I’m absolutely, yeah, looking forward to the buzz of that.”

But celebrating his 36th year in the industry, Kenny admits that compiling the setlist can be quite the task. However, he understands that some fans will ultimately be disappointed if they don’t hear their favourite songs. Kenny explained: “We try to accommodate as much as we can, the [tracks] that people want. And then obviously with this tour, there are three or four tracks on the new album, and then you just try and juggle it about. And of course, then there’s the hits that people have got to hear and want to hear.

“There might be an obscure track, an album track that became big. I mean, I have several records, several songs, rather, that weren’t hits, but they’re big in the soul scene and big on the Northern soul scene. So they have to be in there, and especially where you move geographically. If I go up north, there are certain songs that they really want to hear because they were big up there, with that kind of soul scene there, and London slightly different again.”
