The Voice is back with season 29, with some changes in the format, which instantly grabbed the attention of the audience. The 25th season was won by Aiden Ross, which marked the coach, Nail Horan’s third win. The Voice generally shows four coaches, and the last 28th season’s coach panel consisted of Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, and Niall Horan.

With the 29th premiere on February 23, 2026, there is a massive change, as per which, the coaching panel won’t have four but rather three coaches. This season, the coaches’ panel will also include Adam Levine, who is returning after 27th season. Adam Levine took a hiatus back in 2019, and after that, he was seen on the 27th season, followed by a break in the 28th season as well. And now that he has returned to the coaches’ panel, we will look at the reason for his exit, along with the reason the singing show has three coaches instead of four, for the first time.

Why is The Voice having three judges instead of four?

This is the first time that The Voice has three coaches. Well, NBC’s decision for the singing show’s 29th season has been made because, as per showrunner Audrey Morrissey, the airtime is less. She told GoldDerby that this season’s hours are considerably fewer. As per Audrey Morrisssey, the teams would be ‘too small’ if there were four coaches.

It was further revealed that only 30 contestants from this season are advancing to the next level, following the Blind Audition. Each of the coaches will have 10 contestants, totalling 30, compared to 48 contestants in seasons 27 and 28, and 56 contestants from season 26. The new title of season 29 is Battle Of Champions, which refers to the three coaches, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and John Legend, and all of them have won previously with their contestants. This season, each coach will bring two All-Stars from the previous seasons, as reported. This means each coach will get a chance to bring past contestants to help them get an advantage in the finale by performing in sing-offs.

Why did Adam Levine leave The Voice, and then come back?

Adam Levine is back on the coaches panel after taking a break for season 28. After taking the spot on the red chair for nearly a decade, Adam Levine took a break from the same back in 2019. He announced the same on his Instagram, while reflecting on his journey on the show.

Much later, speaking on The Howard Stern Show, Adam Levine shared the real reason he took a break. Adam shared that he needed to focus on his family. He mentioned that he was extremely busy with the show for more than 8 years, and it was fortunate, but he was superbly busy. Meanwhile, he got married and became a dad to two kids, which made him feel at a point that he needed to step back and focus on his family a bit. Adam could be quoted as saying:

“This was the right time for me to go,” he shared. “For eight-and-a-half years, I was so busy. I was beyond fortunate to go through all of it because it was a life-altering experience being on that show … and then it got to the point where I got married, I had two kids, and I wanted to spend time with them.”

Following this, Adam Levine came back on the show for the 27th season back in 2025, and back then, he said he felt that the stars actually aligned and it felt right. He further added that the break he took actually helped him to grow creatively. He also took a brief break and was not there for the 28th season, as he was out on tour with Maroon 5, for their eighth album, Love Is Like. However, Levine is back for season 29. Speaking about his 18th season with the show, Levine told NBC:

“I’m back for my 18th season, and I haven’t lost my stuff. I’m still crushing it. I am a piece of the show’s long lineage, so therefore, I feel like I always have an advantage.”
