BBC Radio 2 host Vernon Kay revealed he knew all too well about the “gut-wrenching” moments that come with fatherhood, being a parent to two daughters with his wife, Tess Daly

Vernon Kay praised one of his listeners on his BBC Radio 2 show today after relating to a parenting milestone. During his regular segment “good news Wednesday”, the 51-year-old read out messages from listeners celebrating personal achievements and happy moments.

One message in particular struck a chord. A listener named Matt shared that his four-year-old son, Teddy, went into school with “no fuss” and “a smile on his face” for the first time. As a father of two daughters, Vernon said of the relatable moment: “We’ve all been there, we’ve all experienced that.

“There is nothing worse than you turning your back on your little [one] who’s crying because they don’t want to go to school. It’s the worst feeling as a parent, ah, that is gut-wrenching,” he added.

“But well done Matt in Scunthorpe, you did something different maybe this morning, I don’t know, maybe today’s routine was a bit different and you put the big fella Teddy in a good mood, bravo, do that again tomorrow.”

Vernon shares two daughters, Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 16, with his wife Tess Daly, the former host of Strictly Come Dancing. Over the years, he has regularly given listeners an insight into his family life during his show.

Back in December, Vernon offered his “thoughts and prayers” to a fellow parent juggling two children under two. Reflecting on his and Tess’ own parenting journey, he explained how their approach changed with their second child.

“You know with your second child… first child, you sterilise everything, dummy falls on the floor, you then put it in the steriliser for another three and a half hours to make sure it’s clean,” he shared.

“Second one, [you] just ram it in your mouth [swooshing sound], ‘there you, go have that’.”

He continued: “With Amber, we completely ignored her. She’s fed, she’s got a clean nappy on, leave her, she’ll be alright and she was.

“And now, she sleeps when she’s walking around! It worked a right treat.”

However, the presenter acknowledged how difficult it can be to ignore a child’s cries, adding: “It’s hard though, because they’re your kids aren’t they so when they’re like [crying noise] you’re like, shall I go through the door?

“If I go through the door they’ll keep crying, it’s going to become a routine, if they call, we go, if they call, we go.”

Concluding, he admitted of the tactic: “It worked with Amber, not so much with Phoebe.”

After spending many years out of her parents’ spotlight, Phoebe has recently begun gaining wider recognition.

In 2024, she took part in her first photoshoot with Vernon, where she spoke about forging her own career path and not mentioning who her parents are to new friends.

Discussing her future goals, she shared with The Sun: “I like the production and editing side.

“I’d love to act, but will leave presenting to my mum and dad. I’m just trying to understand what I want to do. I think you go to uni to figure out what you want to do in life.

“I’d like to do some work experience, as it’s hands-on, even if I start as a runner and work my way up.”
