TAMPA — When the Yankees acquired Ryan Weathers last month, the left-hander did not have to look far to find out about playing in New York

Of course, Weathers had already heard plenty of stories growing up from his dad, former MLB reliever David Weathers, but now they would mean a little more from the man who was a Yankee from 1996-97 and helped win a World Series in 1996.

“There’s not a better place to play in Major League Baseball than playing for the New York Yankees, the greatest franchise ever,” David Weathers, who like his son was traded from the Marlins to the Yankees, said Wednesday night before arriving at Steinbrenner Field to watch Ryan make his spring debut.

“From a personal standpoint, I understand the pressure that comes with playing in New York and all those types of things. But also understand how unbelievably — me being there for the last part of ’96 and the first part of ’97, and not doing great, but being part of a ’96 World Series team and pitching that postseason, just that little short time put me on the map, so to speak. It was incredible. I’m excited for him.”
