The creator of the hit sitcom Benidorm says he has been forced to sell the Spanish home where he wrote the show after his divorce from one of the actors

Derren Litten, the creator of Benidorm, has revealed that he is selling his Spanish home and claims a “shameless, career gold digger” forced him to put it on the market.

The 55-year-old Benidorm creator wrote his show at the very house he is selling. He had lived in the property, located in Costa Blanca North, Alicante, with his ex husband Jake Canuso, 56, for a decade before they split in 2022.

Taking to social media on 25 February, Derren wrote: “Would you like to buy the house where I wrote the Benidorm TV series? I love this house but thanks to a shameless, career gold digger I have to sell. As the Spanish say, No pasa nada!”

It’s not clear who Derren is referring to as a “shameless career gold digger”, but fans have speculated that he is throwing in a dig at his ex, Jake. One wrote online: “Derren must be talking about his ex…”. Another said: “Just ruined my image of Jake.”

However, other fans, who still felt Derren was talking about his ex, came to Jake’s defence. “A shameless gold digger? Married divorced and have to split the value of your house between 2! How is that a gold digger?” one asked. A second said: “Calling your husband of 10 years a career gold digger doesn’t make any sense, 10 years is one hell of a shift to put in if so.”

The house is on the market for €925,000 (£805,600) and includes a large private pool, which is covered with terrace, an outdoor kitchen and a bar. There is also a living room and separate dining area with three bedrooms, one of which is an ensuite. An office space is at the bottom of the garden.

Speaking about his divorce in 2024, Derren said: “I don’t really talk about my personal life here but the reason I’ve been a bit scarce on the socials is for the last 18 months I’ve been going through a pretty miserable divorce. So I’m obviously poor now. And you thought we couldn’t have more in common then we already do?!”

When Derren and Jake got married, they were working on Benidorm together – Derren as the writer and Jake as the lead actor. From 2007 to 2018, Jake played Mateo Castellanos, a member of staff at The Solana, an all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm, a popular destination for British holidaymakers. Jake was the only cast member to appear in every episode of the show.

Years after the show ended, a source told the Sun that it was unlikely Benidorm would return because of Derren and Jake’s divorce: “Matteo is Benidorm, he’s the character that everyone wants to see. He’s been part of the Solana since the beginning so for him not to feature in any future reboot, well it just would not be the same without him. Jake created one of the show’s most loved characters in Matteo but with everything that’s happened between him and Derren, it’s not looking good.”

The Mirror reached out to Derren and Jake’s respective representatives for comment.
