Footage of a person widely reported to be Sheeran circulated on social media this morning.

“Morning, Ed, welcome to Melbourne, mate!” said one man off-camera.

Clad in a green hoodie stretched tight across his cap and face, Sheeran was filmed wearing a black backpack and pushing a trolley holding a bag from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo.

Given the lack of identifying features in the footage, not everyone who saw it was convinced it was the A Team and Shape of You singer at first.

Others wondered why he would travel on a $164 ticket when he has a net worth of about $700 million.

In a 2025 interview on the Louis Theroux Podcast, Sheeran said his wife encouraged him to travel on public transport to save emissions and to stay grounded.

Sheeran’s border-hopping rail journey came in the same week that the Australian government announced the next stage of plans for high-speed rail along Australia’s east coast.

An eventual high-speed link to Melbourne would cut the train trip from Sydney to Melbourne down to just four hours, the government said. That would save Sheeran the need to travel overnight – if he’s still touring by then.

Sheeran most recently performed in Brisbane on this tour, where he continued his tradition of visiting places around the globe named Ipswich.
