Strictly Come Dancing champion Bill Bailey said he intends to have the potential issue checked, after years of dealing with a separate chronic health condition

Bill Bailey has said he is “living day to day” after being warned about a potential health issue. The Strictly Come Dancing champion explored Vietnam for his new Channel 4 series, travelling to destinations including Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.

Dubbed a wildly entertaining yet heartfelt journey, the trip delivered more than just stunning scenery. During a session with a spiritual practitioner fortune teller, the 61-year-old was told he might have a problem with his small intestine.

Asked about the claim, he told The Metro: “I’m living day to day. At any point I could conk out. I have kept an eye on it. You think it’s all nonsense, but on the safe side I should probably check it out. It seems to be all right.” While in Vietnam, Bill also took part in the cultural tradition of burning paper effigies, a sculptural representation, often life-size, of a specific person or a prototypical figure, used in memory of loved ones.

During the session Bill was stunned to discover paper replicas of a wireless radio – something that reminded him of his late mother Madryn. Coincidentally, during his time in Hanoi, he realised it had been 20 years since her death.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found a paper radio because that was what my mum loved more than anything else,” he said. “Suddenly there was a confluence of circumstances.”

The comedian also used the moment to remember his late friend Sean Lock, who died in 2021 after cancer. Five years on, the Strictly star said he still feels his presence “very close”.

“I hear him talking, what he might say about something. It was a lovely and quite fun way to remember someone, which I think I’ll continue to do,” he added.

Bill’s latest health concern is not his first. He has previously been hospitalised several times with asthma and was put on a nebuliser – a device that turns medication into a fine mist so it can be inhaled more deeply.

In recent years, he experienced a “mortifying moment” during a gig in Australia, when he was forced to flee the stage after suffering an asthma attack – an incident he later described as a wake-up call.

To prevent a repeat, Bill, who is the son of a GP, now undergoes regular medical reviews and has been prescribed a steroid inhaler to reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms.

He previously told us: “Each time I went on stage, I literally had an inhaler perched next to the microphone, one by my guitar and another on the piano. I was so scared of not being able to breathe again.”

Bill Bailey’s Vietnam starts this Saturday at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
