In a new development for fans of classic Bollywood comedies, producer Deepak Mukut has revealed his plans to bring back the 1980 hit Do Aur Do Paanch. While recent rumours suggested that Rohit Shetty’s upcoming Golmaal 5 might be inspired by the original film, he quickly dismissed those reports as factually incorrect, misleading, and completely untrue.
Now, it is confirmed that the project is officially in the works under Deepak Mukut, who holds the rights to the original Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor-starrer. Speaking about the revival to Midday, the producer shared that the project is currently at the scripting stage.
This isn’t the first time Mukut has envisioned a modern take on the classic. He revealed that he had been eyeing this project for nearly ten years. He shared, “A decade ago, I was planning a remake with Kunal Kohli as the director, and Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol playing Bachchanji and Shashi Kapoor’s roles respectively. At that time, it could not materialise.”
Despite the initial delay, the producer is keen on revisiting the idea and is considering various creative directions. He explained, “I haven’t decided whether the movie will be inspired by, a remake, or a sequel to Do Aur Do Paanch. Ideally, I’d like to cast Abhishek and Bobby again as they look great together on screen.”
To ensure the exclusivity of his intellectual property, Mukut took proactive steps after hearing rumours about other filmmakers potentially using the theme. He recalled, “I put the notice in a trade magazine, so that no one else can remake or be inspired by it. I own Do Aur Do Paanch’s rights.”
While it remains to be seen if the film will be a direct remake or a fresh sequel, the possibility of seeing Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol recreate the iconic camaraderie of the original leads has already sparked interest. For now, the project remains in its early development phase as the script is being finalized.
