Actor Jyotika is not one to hand out compliments lightly. So when she pens a long, heartfelt note about a film, it is worth paying attention. After filmmaker Atlee recently voiced his admiration for Thaai Kizhavi, Jyotika has now joined the chorus, sharing an emotional tribute to the film and its team following its premiere screening in Chennai on Wednesday. She attended the show alongside husband Suriya.

Taking to social media, Jyotika described the film as “progressive,” applauding its portrayal of womanhood. “Such a delight to see the essence and strength of womanhood showcased so beautifully! Heartwarming and feel-good for sure, but most importantly, such a progressive film!” she wrote, summing up her viewing experience in glowing terms.

Her words hint at a film that balances accessibility with purpose, blending warmth and humour with a pointed social message. Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan, the film marks his first outing behind the camera. And that fact clearly impressed Jyotika. “Is this actually your first film? What an important message you have conveyed for our society! And with such dignified humour and ease. Felt so proud as a woman watching your story. Your thought process truly reflects your character,” she noted, expressing surprise at the maturity of the storytelling.

Backing the project is actor-producer Sivakarthikeyan, who has increasingly aligned his banner with content-driven ventures. Jyotika made it a point to thank him for placing his faith in a narrative led by a senior female actor. “Thank you for giving a powerhouse talent like Radhika the stage she truly deserves. Thank you on behalf of the entire actress fraternity for making a film on a woman and her pure talent despite the age barrier. Thank you for backing such an important film for women with your star power.”

In an industry often preoccupied with youth-centric storytelling, her remark about “despite the age barrier” carries weight. It underlines the rarity of mainstream films that centre women beyond a certain age bracket and allow them to command the narrative.

At the heart of Thaai Kizhavi is Radikaa Sarathkumar, and Jyotika reserved her most effusive praise for the veteran performer. In a detailed paragraph, she celebrated the physical and emotional effort that went into the role. “You just amaze me! So inspirational! I cannot even imagine the hard work physically gone into this role. Thaai Kizhavi was not just powerful and intelligent but the cutest too; she is a reflection of the off-screen Radhika we all know. You stole our hearts with your body language, style, innocence, voice changeover, laughter, dialogue delivery and small gestures in the performance which set you apart as an actor!”

Signing off, Jyotika urged audiences to embrace the film in theatres. “For me, Thaai Kizhavi is not just a woman-driven entertainer. It’s a film which takes society and cinema one step forward! Be proud, team Thaai Kizhavi!” (sic)

Apart from Radikaa, the film features Raichal Rabecca, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth, Muthukumar, Aruldoss, Singampuli, Ilavarasu and George Mariyan. With cinematography by Vivek Vijayakumar, editing by San Lokesh and music composed by Nivas K Prasanna, the film hit screens on February 27.

If Jyotika’s endorsement is anything to go by, Thaai Kizhavi might just be more than a feel-good watch. It could well be a cultural conversation starter.
