The Brit Awards were back tonight and there was quite the drama – including Jack Whitehall’s unlikely Epstein joke, multiple censored moments and even a stage invader
The Brit Awards were back tonight, with more chaos and drama as they moved to their new home of Manchester. Olivia Dean – who also performed – was the big winner of the night, taking home four prizes.
Wolf Alice, EJAE, Audrey Nuna and REI AMI, the singing voices of HUNTR/X, Alex Warren, Mark Ronson, ROSALÍA, SOMBR and RAYE all performed at the event. There were heartfelt tributes to Ozzy Osbourne, who posthumously won the Lifetime Achievement award, and Mani from The Stone Roses.
Here’s everything that happened at the Brit Awards tonight – including things you didn’t see on screen!
Censored moments
During a visit to the politicians table, host Jack spoke to Andy Burnham and Lisa Nandy. His comment was bleeped out, but The Mirror can reveal what he had said. He told the audience: “Are there any more politicians here? Mandelson was on the list, oh no that’s another list.” He is referencing the Epstein Files, which featured many names including Lord Peter Mandelson.
Elsewhere, winner Goose uses his speech to say ‘Free Palestine and f**k ICE’, with his words censored by ITV during the broadcast. Noel Gallagher was also censored.
Noel was honoured with a message from Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, where he praised the Oasis star. Speaking on stage, Noel firstly thanked his brother before thanking the rest of his bandmates.
He ended his speech with a nod to his beloved Manchester City, where he shouted “up the f***ing blues”, referencing City’s kit colour. His comment was met by many boos in the arena – likely from rival Manchester United fans.
Memoriam segment criticised
The Stone Roses star Mani was honoured with a heartfelt tribute at the Brits tonight – but fans were horrified by the In Memoriam segment. As exclusively revealed by The Mirror ahead of the ceremony, the tribute was led by Charlatans legend Tim Burgess.
In the emotional tribute, he said: “Hi everyone, I’m here tonight to pay tribute to my good friend. Mani changed music and inspired generations ahead of him. These songs he recorded will be his legacy.
“He was truly one of the phenomenal ones. I’d like you to think about Mani for a moment and we can cherish the thought that we got to experience our time and his time together. Let’s take a few moments to remember Mani.”
However, fans did not like the new layout for the In Memoriam segment, where names were scattered across the screen. One wrote: “Random cutting to ad break!?! #BRITs,” as a second added: “SPOTY do better tributes to people who have passed away…..that montage was poor #BRITs.” A third said: “That was a terrible In Memoriam section #BRITs.”
Fancy meals
The Mirror were in attendance at the Manchester event, with the stars settling down for a luxurious menu. The starter features salt baked celeriac, confit leek, truffle, seaweed and mushroom dashi, black garlic ketchup and leek ash.
The main course was a roast venison lion with confit venison haunch filled potato alongside beer pickled mushrooms, onion, caramelised artichoke, crispy cavalo nero and a venison jus. The vegetarian option has been named the “reduced carbon main course” and is roasted hen of the woods mushroom, confit potato, complete with beer pickled mushrooms, onion, caramelised artichoke, green peppercorn and mustard seed veloute.
Dessert was a Manchester tart, a coconut cremeux, sour cherry coconut crunch alongside honeycomb, raspberry, honeycomb tule and a caramelised banana compote to complete the dish.
Jack’s awkward speech
Introducing the performers, Jack quipped about Alex Warren being an “Ed Sheeran from Temu” and there was a dig at Nick Grimshaw, when Mark Ronson was referenced ahead of his Outstanding Contribution award.
Following the first award being given out, Jack made a dig at the BBC and the BAFTAs. John Davidson attended the film awards but during a series of involuntary tics, the Tourettes sufferer shouted out a number of words. One of those was a racist slur, which he shouted whilst Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.
During tonight’s ceremony, Jack quipped that they had the best in the business on the bleeper and said he had worked on the BAFTAs too, earning awkward laughter from the crowd.
One fan posted: “Why do they insist on bringing back jack whitehall year after year we are tired #BRITs,” whilst a second added: “Surely they should’ve made the opening about Manchester and not Jack Whitehall obsessing over Harry Styles #BRITs.”
Harry opens the show
Fans were thrilled to see Harry Styles back on stage in Manchester, as he made his long welcomed return to the Brit Awards. Harry performed his new track Aperture from his upcoming next studio album.
In fact, fans claimed they were “shaking” and “going to be sick” after watching it live. Taking to social media, one fan said: “Wish I could be normal but unfortunately I’m literally shaking over Harry Styles performing at the Brits.” Another said: “I AM SHAKING,” as a third added: “I’M GONNA BE SICK.” A fourth fan said: “HE IS A PERFORMER,” as a fifth said: “HARRY IS SO BACK THAT WAS INSANE.” A further post read: “Harry sounds GOOD. Aperture live is such a vibe.”
Ozzy tribute
Prior to a special final performance, a heartbroken Sharon paid tribute to her late husband Ozzy, as he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award. She said: “I know that Ozzy is looking down on us right now. I know what he is thinking. He hated speeches…”
Her final comment, where she said: “There will never be another Ozzy f***ing Osbourne and I f***ing love you,” ended up being censored due to the swearwords.
Robbie – who was invited personally by Sharon to be part of this special moment – then took to the stage to perform alongside the likes of Adam Wakeman, Robert Trujillo, Tommy Clufetos and Zakk Wylde
Before the award, there was a touching tribute to Ozzy looking back at his career. There was then a note by Dolly Parton who praised Ozzy’s love of theatrics. Ozzy died aged 76 on July 22 last year, just weeks after he had performed at his Back to the Beginning concert.
Intruder on stage
Brits act Sombr was pushed on stage by an intruder and had to be removed by security. Sombr – real name Shane Michael Boose – seemed taken aback when a person rushed on stage. The cameras immediately pulled back and the security could be seen carrying the person off stage in a shocking turn of events.
However, it looks like it could have been a planned interruption as the man was wearing a shirt which read “Sombr is a homewrecker”, which seemingly is a nod to his new music being released soon.
Fans pointed out the shock security breach on Reddit, with one writing: “Some dude literally went on stage and pushed him mid performance, it didn’t look staged. He seemed pretty confused and shaken, security also had real licenses on their arms too which is also why I don’t think it was staged.”
Surprise performers
There were some great surprise performers tonight, including Dua Lipa – who arrived on stage during Mark Ronson’s megamix medley of hits to mark his Outstanding Contribution award.
Elsewhere, hit singer Bjork appeared on stage during Rosalia’s performance. Fans were left stunned when the pop star made an unexpected appearance at the event to perform Berghain alongside Rolsalia.
