Despite an uptick in queer representation in cinema, there’s still a must-needed gap to fill when it comes to lesbian movies. And we’re not talking about inauthentic representations written by straight men. No. We want lesbian love stories at the front and centre, lesbian characters being just as messy and chaotic as heterosexual ones, lesbian superheroes saving the world, and (not a lesbian movie, but bear with us here) a completely reshot final two seasons of Killing Eve. Is that really too much to ask?
It, in a couple of words, is not. And that breadth of story types is exactly what we tried to capture here in this roundup of gloriously gay movies. From sapphic period dramas that are heavy on drama to sweet coming-of-age (and coming out) stories and psychological thrillers that just might give you nightmares, we’re pretty sure we’ve found the best lesbian movies to watch right now.
Note that while most of these movies do involve an explicitly lesbian protagonist, romance, or storyline, a handful don’t. That’s because—as much as we don’t want to sound like Darren Criss right now—we took the liberty of adding some culturally lesbian movies to our lineup, too. There are simply too many iconic movies of yore out there that relied on queer subtext and themes to tell what are, at their essence, lesbian stories, and we felt that some of them (*ahem* Fried Green Tomatoes) can’t in good conscience be left off a list of the best lesbian films.
So whether you’re looking to stream new lesbian movies on Netflix or here to brush up on your queer cinema history knowledge, we’re here to tell you: you’ve got options. And they also include a lot of Kristen Stewart movies. (So many Kristen Stewart movies). You’re welcome.
