Further into his acceptance speech, after acknowledging Warner Bros. executives and his co-stars, Delroy gestured towards the camera, declaring: “They’re telling me to wrap up. I’m not gonna wrap up,” making it clear he was being prompted to conclude his remarks.

He chuckled heartily before finishing with: “From the bottom of our hearts, to the bottom of your hearts, thank you so much for everything. God bless y’all.

“It even feels electric to stand next to them, you guys,” host Kristin Bell said as the cast departed the stage. The Southern Gothic vampire thriller, penned and helmed by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, secured five Actor Awards nominations on the night.

The ceremony mishap follows recent controversy surrounding Delroy and co-star Michael B. Jordan at the BAFTAs on February 22. The N-word was shouted while the pair were presenting by audience member John Davidson, who was Tourette’s Syndrome.

While the actors responded to the incident with dignity, the BBC came under fire for failing to edit out or censor the racial slur, despite operating with a two-hour broadcast delay and having removed similar outbursts from John, whose documentary had been nominated for an award.

John said he is “deeply mortified” following the involuntarily action and issued a statement following the ceremony. As part of his apology, John said: “In addition to the announcement by (show host) Alan Cumming, the BBC and Bafta, I can only add that I am, and always have been, deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning.”
