Chef Gordon Ramsay’s reported latest project in Cornwall follows controversy over remarks he previously made about the local community
Gordon Ramsay has been defended by Amanda Holden, following his latest property purchase in Cornwall. The Mail Online reports that the celebrity chef and his wife Tana have snapped up a 19th-century four-bedroom home for an estimated £9.65 million.
The residence is understood to be situated mere metres away from their beachfront property in Rock, purchased for £4.4 million in 2015, which they subsequently completely rebuilt.
During that construction phase, Gordon reportedly annoyed over 20 neighbours who lodged complaints about his development proposals. He courted additional criticism when he travelled to the location during the Covid lockdown.
According to the report, the chef’s most recent purchase is already anticipated to generate fresh controversy, with a major redevelopment expected across his two-acre land.
This follows the 59-year-old’s previous admission that he “can’t stand” local residents – a comment seemingly referencing backlash from locals.
Speaking about the matter on the Heart Radio Breakfast Show, showbiz correspondent Ashley Roberts told listeners: “He loves the swimming here, he loves the gorgeous coastline, but apparently he doesn’t love the Cornish people.”
Putting on a Cornish accent, presenter Amanda Holden quipped: “What? Are you having a laugh?!” She then added more earnestly: “I imagine he does like them but they don’t like him because he’s doing some building work.”
Her co-presenter Jamie Theakston then challenged why Gordon would purchase another property there if he genuinely disliked the residents.
“Because he loves it so much, also he’s investing in the area,” Amanda responded. “He’s surfing and cold water swimming. I don’t believe he said that [about the locals],” she continued. “I’m saying that because I’m watching the documentary and I understand him and his gorgeous family.”
The celebrity chef has previously discussed his views about Cornwall in earlier interviews. Speaking to Vernon Kay on BBC Radio 2, he remarked: “I would go down to the beautiful Cornish coast and get a little line-caught seabass and do that with a little light crushed potatoes.
“Trust me, I absolutely love Cornwall, it’s just the Cornish I can’t stand.” In a later interview with Scott Mills, while promoting his new Netflix documentary last month, the restaurateur praised the region, though suggested maintaining his garden was “expensive”.
“I absolutely adore Cornwall, honestly, from the surfing, the swimming,” he remarked. When asked by a listener about making a profit on his £20 million London venture, Gordon quipped that local tradespeople were the real winners.
“You’re right, but gardeners are the new secret millionaires – honestly, my gardeners in Cornwall, oh my goodness me, man, they’re expensive,” he revealed. “This is a long-term game. We signed a 15–20 year lease, so fingers crossed many will come back if I stop giving away free lunches and dinners,” Gordon added with a chuckle.
