Countryfile presenter Michaela Strachan has spoken openly about her battles with her health in recent months and how she felt going through a recent cancer scare
Countryfile star Michaela Strachan has said she’s made peace with the fact there are some things she can no longer do. Michaela, 59, has spoken about the impact of getting older on her body and how her approach to it has evolved.
Michaela, who tore her hamstring whilst competing in Dancing on Ice, admitted it took her body a while to heal after the injury. Furthermore, she’s highlighted that whilst some people can still move freely into their later years, she may not be able to.
Speaking to Closer UK, she said: “It’s so important to keep moving as you get older. I had an accident when I took part in Dancing On Ice and it too my body a long time to heal.
“It’s made me respect my body more than ever and it’s also been very frustrating because I wasn’t able to do a lot of those things I love as much as I wanted to.
“I’m definitely not as supple as I once was, despite doing yoga, and I’ve made peace with the fact that I probably won’t ever be able to do the splits again.
“Angela Rippon is amazing and I love that she can still do them, but I think those days are behind me!”
This isn’t the first time Michaela has opened up about her health, with the Springwatch star discussing the impact of the menopause on her life, including her appearance on Dancing On Ice, one that coincided with her going through post menopause.
Speaking about the matter to the i she said: “I’m not a naturally anxious person, but that show coincided with me going through post menopause.
Michaela added that she responded to that by “going inwards”, something that became apparent in contrast to younger skaters. She added: “I noticed that when the younger people were nervous, they became quite loud – chatting and laughing more noisily. I did the exact opposite.”
Michaela also discussed how her glittering career has been helped by the fact she was a resilient individual and that she was worried younger generations “weren’t being taught enough about how to be resilient”.
As well as battling the post menopause, Michaela also recently revealed her second cancer scare. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, but has now said she faced a second one after viewers noticed a lump on her throat which she was live on air.
Whilst being interviewed on the How to Be 60 with Kaye Adams podcast, she said: “I did have a second scare, which was extraordinary, because I was doing Springwatch and I had a few people after the show message me and say, did you know you’ve got a lump on your throat?
“I was like, ‘have I?’ I was watching the show back in bed — because I’m slightly geeky like that, I’ve always watched the live show back — and I thought, ‘oh my god, I do — I’ve got a lump’.”
Fortunately for Michaela, tests on the lump later revealed it to be a benign cyst which medical professionals were able to drain.
