Everything you need to know:

  1. During the lead up to the finale, Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) has been rapidly declining in health and Doctor Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann) confirmed that the nun’s loss of appetite and exhaustion are the result of a chronic kidney disease.
  2. In forthcoming scenes airing during episode eight on Sunday, 8 March, Sister Monica Joan reunites with Bernie Mullocks (Christopher Reilly). The much-loved Mullocks’ family were introduced during series five before returning in series six as part of the ongoing Thalidomide story.
  3. The stories reported to feature in this Sunday’s series finale include Rosalind and Cyril’s shotgun wedding, Sister Veronica’s decision over whether to return to the sisterhood, Trixie’s announcement that she’s leaving for a new job at a private clinic and Sister Monica Joan’s final journey from Nonnatus House.
  4. In an advance glimpse of the Call the Midwife episode, Bernie sits beside his wife, Rhoda, as she lies in a hospital. The couple hold hands as they look dishevelled, though it is unclear why Rhoda was admitted to the hospital.
  5. In another sneak peek, Bernie is seen pushing a frail Sister Monica Joan in a wheelchair through the streets of Poplar, carrying a bouquet of white flowers.
  6. Bernie and Sister Monica Joan also visit a church together, though it is currently unknown what brings the two back together.
  7. The BBC drama has also released a photo of Sister Monica Joan lying in bed, eyes closed, with her hands by her side. Is this the end for the adored sister? Viewers will have to wait and see what lies ahead for Sister Monica Joan.
  8. The show is taking a break from BBC1 for the first time since 2012 to allow for the making of a three-part prequel series, set during the war, and a movie featuring the regular cast, set in 1972, which is likely to be filmed in Australia.
  9. The next time we see this cast, they’ll probably be Down Under – but before that comes a three-part wartime prequel, due to launch on BBC1 on Christmas Day..
