As the eldest daughter of an eldest daughter, I have this unshakeable habit of taking charge all the time, which means I often end up doing things alone rather than waiting for calendars to align. I go to the cinema by myself, make dinner reservations for one, go on solo hiking trips and work out by myself. But as much as I love my space, I can’t help but wonder what sharing these experiences with a friend would be like. Imagine lying on a beach with not a care in the world except listening to the gossip your bestie is dishing. Imagine exploring a new place together with no itinerary, just vibes, catching sunsets, petting cats and making memories that feed your soul.
Last year, the Four Seasons invited me—along with a plus one—to the idyllic Landaa Giraavaru island. I grappled with whom to take. Someone who enjoys the quiet, is a neat freak and, like me, had been waiting for this moment for a long time. I could only think of my high school best friend, especially in hopes that it would bridge the gap that adulting had opened between us. Dates aligned, tickets booked, 100 reels of life at the beach exchanged—our girls’ trip to the Maldives was finally on.
Our holiday started on a high note. We flew into Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru in a boxfish seaplane, the most Disney life has ever felt. We decided to each take a window seat instead of sitting together to make the most of the view. Unable to conceal the joy we felt, we kept peeping to exchange smiles across our seats. On arrival, Armando Kraenzlin, regional vice president and general manager of Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, pressed hibiscus flowers into our hands. Our first order of business? Scuba diving. As we changed into our wetsuits and secured our flippers, the chorus of ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara began playing on repeat in my head: “Kab tak gine, hum dhadkane, dil jaise dhadke dhadakne do.” Scared, excited and captivated, I turned to ask my friend how she was feeling, to which I received a lukewarm response. Brushing it off as nerves, I helped her through the training and completed our first dive.
