Saurabh Shukla has recently opened up on approaching Dimple Kapadia for Jab Khuli Kitaab. Not just that, the actress also helped make a major scene in the movie flawless. Opening up on that, Shukla revealed that Kapadia helped in framing an important dialogue, which eventually gave rise to a key scene.
The movie also stars Pankaj Kapur and Aparshakti Khurana in leading roles. Saurabh shared how nervous he was before sending the script to the veteran actress. “I didn’t have the courage to even think that she’s going to do the film,” he noted.
“Thanks to Sameer Nair, Applause Entertainment’s CEO and my partner at Shoestrap, Naren Kumar, and also Mahesh Korade – they were all asking me to think about Dimple (Kapadia) ma’am for the female lead. I said, ‘She’s a huge star. She doesn’t know me.’ People know me as an actor, but they don’t know me as a director. Sameer told me to send the script. I thought I’d get a call from her office 15 to 20 days later rejecting it. But to my surprise, she called me three days later and said yes. There was a pause. It was pure luck and I can’t explain it to you,” he added.
Was it crucial to cast Dimple Kapadia in the film? Saurabh said, “She is the heart of the film. She is perfect. She is the heart of this story. The story of Gopal ji (Pankaj Kapur), is not complete without her. And that’s what it talks about.”
Then he mentioned that there was an important dialogue in the film, which was written by Kapadia. He said, “And I’ll tell you what all she did. She wrote a very important dialogue, one that made one of our crucial scenes perfect. When Pankaj Kapur said, ‘Mujhe talaq chahiye because you did this.’ She reveals that she had loved the other person. But then the entire dialogue, where she quips how that love was fleeting and she stayed beside her husband without complaints, completely changed it for us.”

Saurabh narrated the dialogue as he shared a glimpse of what Dimple had written, “Haan kiya tha maine pyaar yaar. Kiya tha maine pyaar usse. But ek pal ke liye kiya tha. Lekin zindagi kiske saath guzaari? Pachaas saal kiske saath guzaari maine? Main chahti toh uss July chali jaati na. Nahi kiya. Kyuki mujhe malum tha aap akele rahe jaayenge. Tha’s by her.” (Yes, I did love him. But only for a brief moment. But who did I spend my entire life with? Who did I spend 50 years with? I could have eloped with him. But I knew you would be very lonely had I done that. That’s by her.)”
