Rain could fall in Brisbane through the weekend and beyond, as a possible cyclone approaches the state’s north.

Showers are predicted in the south-east until Tuesday, with severe storms possible.

Daniel Hayes from the Bureau of Meteorology said the weather system off the coast near Cooktown might drive moisture towards Brisbane in coming days.

The heaviest rain could fall on Sunday, with a weather system up north potentially drenching Brisbane. Julius Dennis

“We do start to see the increase in tropical moisture from later tomorrow and particularly over the weekend,” he said.

He said Sunday could be the wettest day, with an upper-level trough moving across the region.

“It’s likely to be showers and possibly some storms in the mix,” Hayes said.

“Particularly on the Sunday, we might see some severe storms in the south-east.”

Most people would probably receive 5 to 10 millimetres of rain between Friday and Monday, with up to 40 millimetres possible in some areas.

He said the developing weather off the north coast was more likely than not to remain a low-pressure system.

The chance it would develop into a cyclone before it crossed the coast on Friday was up to 35 per cent.

“Even if it doesn’t get to cyclone strength, it still brings a significant amount of rain.”

The Bureau of Meteorology was criticised last month for its projections, when expectations of a major wet period in Brisbane and across the south-east failed to materialise.
