Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was one of the most highly anticipated films of 2025. Well, for those who couldn’t catch the film in theatres, the third and final instalment of the Downton Abbey franchise will reportedly be released on the OTT giant, Netflix, today, March 7, 2026. For the unversed, while the film brings back almost the entire cast and characters, including the protagonist, ‘Lady Mary’, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, her husband, ‘Henry Talbot’, portrayed by Matthew Goode, is nowhere to be found. This is especially shocking since he has been part of the original show since its fifth season. So, what happened to him? (Spoilers ahead).

Did ‘Henry’ and ‘Mary’ get divorced?

Before they tied the knot, ‘Henry’ and ‘Mary’ had a whirlwind romance. For those unaware, he was ‘Mary’s’ second husband. In the first Downton Abbey film, it is revealed that the couple have become parents to a daughter. Although their relationship seemed fine at first, after their marriage, things slowly started to go south. Apparently, it was ‘Henry’s’ love for his wife which led him to give up on his passion for cars. At one point, he even confessed that ‘Mary’s’ heiress status was something which made him feel highly inadequate compared to her.

By the second film of the franchise, ‘Henry’ soon disappears. In an effort to explain his absence, ‘Mary’ tells everyone that he is actually away on business. While his disappearance clued viewers in from the start that their relationship is not headed for anything good, the truth is finally revealed in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. In the very beginning of the third and final film, viewers learn that ‘Mary’ and ‘Henry’ are divorced.

They had been in the midst of divorce proceedings for a while, with even their families being aware of their separation. After the news of ‘Mary’s’ failed marriage rapidly spreads through English high society, they start shunning her. Apparently, ‘Mary’ had already expected this to happen.

During a conversation with her parents, ‘Mary’ confessed that the more ‘Henry’ spent time away from their home, the more he wanted to. It is further revealed that at one point, ‘Henry’ meets someone named ‘Mrs. Baron’, who ends up becoming his mistress. It is believed that this is when ‘Henry’ realises that he can no longer stay married to ‘Mary’. It is worth mentioning that during the legal proceedings, ‘Henry’s’ adultery was presented as a cause of divorce. However, the woman he presents as his mistress is not ‘Mrs. Baron’, but someone else entirely. Apparently, this was common at the time and even considered “proper” to do.

Matthew Goode’s departure from Downton Abbey was caused by his scheduling conflicts

If fans think that it was ‘Henry’ cheating with another woman during his marriage and his eventual divorce from ‘Mary’, the main reasons for his character to be written off from the film, they are mistaken. For those unaware, Matthew Goode, the actor who plays ‘Henry’, revealed that the real reason for his absence during the second and third Downton Abbey films was a scheduling conflict. Apparently, when the filming for Downton Abbey: A New Era began, Matthew was occupied filming The Offer.
