FX has created an intense buzz around Love Story since its release on February 12, 2026. The show dives into the courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. However, before he tied the knot with Calvin Klein’s PR maven, JFK Jr. was entangled in another, high-profile, and highly volatile relationship with a beautiful blonde movie star, Daryl Hannah. According to PEOPLE, America’s prince and the much-loved actress first met in the early 1980s when they were on a vacation in the Caribbean on the island of St. Martin.

Years later, in 1988, the pair had another fateful meeting when JFK Jr.’s aunt, Lee Radziwill, married director, Herbert Ross. The director had recently directed Daryl in Steel Magnolias, set to come out the following year. The chance led the duo to give their romance a chance. While JFK Jr. was studying law, and Daryl was an actor, they shared several common interests. Both enjoyed outdoor activities such as skiing and camping, and the law student even expressed a keen interest in acting. JFK Jr. even performed in many theatre productions during his time at Brown University. In 1985, JFK Jr. appeared in an Off-Off Broadway production of Winner by Irish playwright Brian Friel at the Irish Arts Centre.

According to reports, some accounts later suggest that JFK Jr.’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, was not in favour of him pursuing an acting career and may have discouraged publicity around the play. However, there is no clear evidence of this. The production ran for only six performances, and Kennedy soon shifted his focus toward law school.

However, despite the attention, the couple sometimes appeared playful in public. A neighbour once described seeing them dancing together on Daryl’s apartment rooftop. According to the neighbour, the actress was barefoot and wearing a shirt, while JFK Jr. wore only boxers. They were laughing, chasing each other, and dancing under the night sky, creating a romantic scene that fascinated onlookers. Amelia Barlow later recalled that the relationship felt exciting and slightly impulsive compared with JFK’s later romance.

One frequently mentioned challenge in the relationship was JFK Jr.’s relationship with his mother. While some suggested that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis did not approve of Daryl, another account reported that a friend had reported that tensions between Daryl and his mother had forced him to temporarily live in a friend’s basement. However, others disputed the same. Daryl’s stepmother, Sue Wexler, later said the actress had told her that Jacqueline had actually been warm and affectionate toward her.

One of his friends, Brian Steel, fondly recalled how enthusiastic JFK Jr. was when he talked about Carolyn while they were jogging together, even though he was still dating Daryl. Another friend, Sasha Chermayeff, believed there was some overlap between JFK Jr.’s relationship with Daryl and his growing interest in Carolyn. However, it was his assistant, RoseMarie Terenzio, who later wrote that JFK Jr. and Carolyn did not begin seriously dating until 1994.

John F. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah officially ended their five-year relationship in 1994. The breakup was not just emotionally difficult but also marked by a tragic incident. During a walk in Central Park, JFK Jr. accidentally lost control of her dog’s leash, and the dog was struck by a car and died. Around the same time, his mother fell seriously ill with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She died on May 19, 1994. Friends later said this period was extremely stressful for JFK Jr. and added further strain to his relationship with the actress.
