Miley Cyrus has reunited with her dad Billy Rae Cyrus as she celebrates the 20-year anniversary of her iconic Disney show, Hannah Montana.
The father-daughter duo star side by side in the show’s upcoming special, which feature an exclusive interview with Miley and unseen footage. In one sweet moment they do a quick hip bump handshake. Billy Ray shared the teaser on Instagram, writing, “20 years later and @mileycyrus still knows the old handshake trick.”
Their joint appearance comes after rumours of a family rift following Billy Ray’s split from Miley’s mother, Tish, in 2022. At the 2024, Grammys, Miley didn’t mention her dad – who is now dating Elizabeth Hurley – during her acceptance speech and one year later, admitted that she and her dad had their “challenges”.

Writing on Instagram, she said: “I rarely comment on rumors, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us. She’s my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn’t know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me – simple, coincidental, and uninteresting.
“My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.”
The Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special is filmed in front of a live audience and will see Miley interviewed by Call Her Daddy podcaster Alex Cooper, as well as previously unseen footage from the series.
The show ran from 2006 until 2011, and was centered around Miley Stewart (played by Miley) who lived a double life, both as a high school student and world-famous pop star, Hannah Montana. Billy Ray played a fictionalised version of himself; a country music star who retired to raise his children and manage his daughter’s career.
In January, Miley opened up about the lessons she’d learned from her godmother, Dolly Parton. The pair sang a rendition of Light of a Clear Blue Morning together in celebration of the Queen of Country’s 80th birthday, an experience Miley reveals was incredible. She says: “I not only love her, I am in awe of her. Her motto of ‘You do you and I’ll do me’ is something I always hold on to. When I first transitioned away from Hannah Montana I felt a lot of judgment, and I wish I had taken that advice then. Nobody should feel judged when all they are trying to do is find their own identity and place in the world.”
As she got older, Miley gained a wild child reputation as she tried to outrun wholesome Hannah Montana. But now the 33-year-old has finally made peace with her showbiz start.
She says: “For so long I tried to shake the image, but now I am confident on who I am. I look back with great memories. If it weren’t for Hannah, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I find it incredibly cool that the girls who used to watch the show will be around my age now – it’s like we have grown up together.”
Professionally, Miley is flying high. In 2024 she celebrated her first two Grammy wins, after her huge pop hit Flowers topped the chart in more than 40 countries. And her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, released last year, received critical acclaim. Personally, things are on the up too. She got engaged to her boyfriend of four years, musician Maxx Morando, 27, in December after meeting him on a blind date in 2021.
