The highlight of Round 2 in the second half of the regular season in Hungary was the match between second-placed Honved and the league leader Ferencvaros. Honved put up a strong fight against the favorites but ultimately left the pool empty-handed. Ferencvaros won 19:15.

Honved started very well, taking a 3:1 lead. However, Ferencvaros quickly responded, scoring four goals in just four minutes to go ahead – 5:4. The Green and Whites didn’t let Honved equalize in the rest of the match. Late into the second quarter, Ferencvaros had an 11:5 lead. Six goals separated the rivals midway through the third quarter again – 14:8.

Honved did not give up. It scored four goals in three minutes, narrowing the deficit to 12:14 with  40 seconds remaining in the third quarter. At the start of the final quarter, Ferencvaros doubled its advantage to 16:12. Honved managed to cut the gap twice more, at 14:16 and 15:17. In the final minute, Dusan Mandic and Szilard Jansik scored for Ferencvaros, sealing a 19:15 victory.

Left-handed players did damage in Honved’s defense. Akos Nagy was the best scorer of the visiting team with six goals. He was followed by Mandic, who found the net thrice. As usual, Nikola Moskov was a standout player in Honved’s attack with five goals, and leftie Viktor Vadovics added three.

Szolnok defeated Eger narrowly, 12:11, in a game with several turns. Three minutes before the end, Eger, the home team, had a slim 11:10 advantage. Szolnok leveled at 11:11. Just 21 seconds before the final buzzer, Gergo Kovacs converted a man-up to secure a 12:11 victory for Szolnok. The best scorers of the game were Eger’s Salamo with four goals, and Szolnok’s Bedo with three goals.

A week after defeating Vasas in the Euro Cup eighth-finals and advancing to the Round of 8, BVSC surprisingly lost at home to OSC and missed a chance to climb to 2nd place ahead of Honved. At halftime, OSC was 6:3 up. BVSC leveled at 8:8 before the final period . In the middle of the fourth period, the teams were tied at 10:10. In the rest of the game, OSC went on a 3:0 run and achieved a 13:10 victory, with four goals from David Gal.

Robert Kovacs is new head coach of Vasas

The match Szeged – Vasas has been postponed to March 18. Vasas will be guided by a new head coach, Robert Kovacs. He was appointed earlier this week, replacing Slobodan Nikic. However, Kovacs, who was an assistant coach until now, had already led the team as the head coach in the previous three games, with Nikic assisting him. Slobodan Nikic, who served as head coach from the autumn of 2021 until now, will continue working at the club as the sports director and will cooperate with Kovacs and the coaching team.

Robert Kovacs, the head coach of Hungary’s U18 national team, which won gold at the 2022 World Youth Championships, was previously a coach of Vasas’s junior and youth teams. Then, he coached OSC before returning to Vasas as an assistant coach last summer.
