With Mother’s Day around the corner, the Princess of Wales will want to honour her own mum, Carole, to whom Prince William once made an important promise to

The Prince and Princess of Wales have certainly had their trials and tribulations over the past two years. First they had to deal with Kate’s unexpected cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatment. While now, alongside the King, they are having to deal with the fallout for the monarchy surrounding the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the Epstein scandal.

But one person both William and Kate know they can rely on for both practical and emotional support is Kate’s mum, Carole. The grandmother-of-seven is often described as the future Queen’s ‘rock’, playing a pivotal role behind the scenes in what has been a turbulent period for the Royal Family.

And while this worry facing the royals would naturally make Carole be concerned about how the situation could be affecting her daughter, royal expert Jennie Bond believes the promise William once made to his mum-in-law will put her mind at rest.

The former BBC royal correspondent told the Mirror : “It’s been reported, and I believe it’s true, that William once promised Mike and Carole that he would protect Catherine and always look after her. And he repeated that vow to a member of the public at one of his first engagements after Catherine’s cancer diagnosis. I’m sure that has earned him the respect of his in-laws.”

On Sunday, the UK celebrates Mother’s Day, with Kate no doubt wanting to honour mum Carole in a special way. And Jennie believes that William, too will recognise the family role she plays. She added: “What seems fairly unusual in the relationship is that William is perhaps his mother-in-law’s biggest fan.

“He warmed to Carole from the start, and loved the easy atmosphere in the family home and the relaxed Sunday lunches they would enjoy together — and no doubt still do. William was probably only just coming to terms with the traumatic loss of his mother when Catherine walked into his life, and , with her, came Carole and a normal, relaxed family who welcomed him into their home.

“For William, it was a breath of fresh air – a touch of uncomplicated normality in his complex life. And I’m sure Catherine loved her parents all the more for making William feel so at home. He respects Carole and loves her high energy and tenacity.”

Unlike their daughter, Carole and Michael generally keep a low profile, living life away from the spotlight. However, it has been plain to see just how much of a presence the couple has been when it comes to supporting Kate, William and their children. The couple have been to every one of their daughter’s Christmas Carol Concerts at Westminster Abbey to quietly, yet proudly support her.

Then, when Kate released a heartwarming video in September 2024 to announce the end of her chemotherapy treatment, it featured her parents, who were seen in the Wales family kitchen in Amner Hall playing a game of cards with George, Charlotte and Louis. However, earlier this week, Carole did make a high profile outing to the Cheltenham Festival, where she enjoyed a day at the races.

She seemed to be fully embraced into the royal inner circle, watching the action alongside Queen Camilla, linking arms with Mike and Zara Tindall and sharing a joke with Princess Anne.

And Jennie explained: “At Cheltenham, it was obvious that her relationship with Catherine’s royal relatives is relaxed and comfortable. Camilla looked pleased to see her, Anne was all smiles, Zara was clearly delighted to share a giggle with her, and Carole seemed totally in her element. She may not have a title or an official royal role, but she is very much one of the family now.

“I’m sure they all recognise how vital Carole has been in supporting Catherine — through the good times and the worrying ones. And you have to remember that she herself was carrying a huge burden of worry over her beloved daughter battling cancer.

“They all know that she is important, too, in William’s life. Carole has been the lynchpin in the Wales’s family as they navigated the repercussions of Catherine’s cancer diagnosis, offering both practical and emotional support.

“Carole and her husband, Mike, have provided an invaluable role model of a happy, stable family for William and the children. It’s something that was sadly lacking for William when he was young, but thanks to the Middletons, he’s found it in later life — and that augurs well for all of them.”
