Conan O’Brien took aim at the Brits in his opening monologue before Irish star Jessie Buckley took him one of the most coveted Oscars at the 98th Academy Awards
The Oscars are over for another year, but there will be lots of gongs heading back to our shores. The 98th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles amid a huge security operation.
The biggest names in showbiz headed to Hollywood for the glitzy bash, and as ever, the British and Irish contingency proved successful. But their wins came after a big jibe by host Conan O’Brien in his opening monologue.
Among the British and Irish winners was Hamnet star Jessie Buckley. The Irish actress won the Best Actress award and shared her delight in a touching speech.
She took the time to pay a sweet tribute to her husband and daughter. The actress then turned her attention to Mother’s Day in a touching nod to her ancestors.

And she told her hubby “I want to have 20,000 more babies with you.” Elsewhere, London-born British-American filmmaker Adam Somner was one of the three producers of One Battle After Another.
The film took the Best Picture Oscar and five other awards. Sadly, Adam died in November 2024. He was just 57 and died of thyroid cancer in Studio City.
BBC Film was also one of the backers behind international film Oscar winner Sentimental Value, while Ireland’s Richard Baneham was among the team that was victorious in the visual effects Oscar category. They bagged the award for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Gareth John was also part of the team that earned the best sound Oscar for F1, while UK-born Mike Hill was named one of the winners for makeup and hairstyling for Frankenstein.
As the show started, comedian Conan didn’t hold back the punches in his opening monologue. He quickly made a joke about recent British arrests. He started by sharing that no British star had been nominated in the Best Actor or Actress categories for the first time in years.
But he then joked: “A British spokesperson said: ‘Yeah but at least we arrest our paedophiles…’ The joke follows the recent arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in a public office following the release of the Epstein files.
The former prince’s arrest was not related to any allegation of sexual misconduct. However, across the Atlantic, it reignited demands for accountability from Epstein’s survivors and US lawmakers, who called for a full investigation into the late sex offender’s many high-profile associates in the US.
Andrew’s arrest comes after months of speculation about his relationship with his deceased paedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein. The former prince has consistently and strenuously denied any wrongdoing.
