When I was a kid in the late ’90s, I begged my mom for colored contacts. They were heavily advertised in magazines around that time and to me, nothing was cooler than going from my regular old blue eyes to violet or turquoise or emerald green. My mom did not give into my pleas, which was probably a good thing, though I do still find colored contacts fascinatingly fun—and so, it seems, does Kim Kardashian, who wore a pair to Vanity Fair Oscar Party and looked like a totally different person!
Now, if we know anything about Kardashian, it’s that we should never assume what she’ll wear or how she’ll glam up for an event. She loves a well-timed beauty surprise, like messy platinum hair at the Met Gala or antique feathers in her updo. The Skims founder isn’t afraid to take a chance or do something different, and for the Oscar Party, that meant icy, blue-gray eyes!

Gone were her dark brown eyes and in their place, a super-light frosty blue with a subtle hint of gray. If you just glanced at her on the red carpet, you’d think, “Oh look, that’s a pretty classic Kim Kardashian glam moment!”: a collarbone-length bob artfully arranged in tousled waves, a sparkly, fitted gown, and long lashes with a nude lip. But upon closer examination, you’ll notice that not only is she wearing colored contacts, she even matched her eye shadow to her eye color with a soft wash of a blue-gray shade across her lids and in the inner corners. Maybe it is time to finally invest in a pair of those much longed-for colored contacts now that I have grown-up money to spend!
